Should I be worried about future problems because I take Valtrex (valacyclovir) everyday? I take 500 every 12 hours. Thanks

No Worries: There is no know problems with taking maintenance valtrex (valacyclovir). It would be worse not to take it as maintenance and have reoccurring breakouts that can cause increase risk of transmission. I am not sure what the exact diagnosis is that you are taking this for, but it is wise to stay suppressed from breakouts. ...Read more

Do I have to take Valtrex (valacyclovir) every day or just when prodrome symptoms arise? I have ghsv1.

Depends...: It all depends on how you were instructed to do so. If your outbreaks are only occasional and you are referring to the oral herpes (or commonly known as cold sores) then you can take when you get symptoms. However, if you are getting them too often and your doctor prescribed it for prevention then take it every day. If that is the case you might need a higher dose when you get sores appearing again. ...Read more

My partner has herpes, I don't. He's on valtrex (valacyclovir). Can I also take Valtrex (valacyclovir) to minimize risk? Is there a possibility it would make a difference?

My partner has herpes, I don't. He's on valtrex (valacyclovir). Can I also take Valtrex (valacyclovir) to minimize risk? Is there a possibility it would make a difference?

Complicated: First, it is not likely that if your partner has this that you do not. You may simply have not developed symptomatic disease, but you can only tell by testing. Yes, you can take oral forms of acyclovir, but whether this will prevent you from becoming infected is unclear. Your partner's taking Acyclovir may reduce the risk to you. ...Read more

Hi, Is it ok to take valtrex (valacyclovir) while I am doing my IVF shots?

Your IVF specialist: Will be the final answer on this, but if you were my patient I would probably say it's ok. Valacyclovir/Valtrex (valacyclovir) has been assigned Pregnancy Risk Category B: No risk in non-human studies such as animal reproduction studies. In general, I believe it is safe to take a medication during IVF if it is safe to take during pregnancy. There is no theoretical reason Valtrex (valacyclovir) should interfere with conception. ...Read more

I've been taling 1000mg for 2 days now. Can I take Valtrex (valacyclovir) 2000mg twice a day for one day to bring the swelling down faster on my coldsores?

Overdoing medicine: The common human thought that "more is better' is not to be used when it comes to medications. The dose is the safe dose and over doing it can bring on side effects and unwanted problems. While valacyclovir is a safe medication it is not shown that over doing the dosing will help speed up healing. ...Read more

Woman I am involved with has herpes over 20 years, takes valtrex (valacyclovir). How safe are we if we start having sex?

Risk exists: You can transmit herpes via sex even if your partner is not actively shedding or has active lesions. While Valtrex (valacyclovir) can prevent outbreaks from herpes lesions, it in itself is not a cure and only a drug to suppress outbreaks. Condoms can drastically reduce but not entirely eliminate the risk of transmission. ...Read more

I'm a female was told that I was expose to HSV 1 & 2 by IgG blood test I have no signs nor symptoms my partner doesn't have it can I still take valtrex (valacyclovir)?

Yes: But why? If you've never had lesions u may go a lifetime w/o developing these. Most adults have been infected by and are carriers of herpes simplex. Once in your body it is permanent. There is no need for Acyclovir unless to limit the frequency of outbreaks or to treat an acute outbreak. Your husband has already been exposed to you or had it prior. Check his antibody. ...Read more

Family history of depression=10% chance of depression. Side effect of valtrex (valacyclovir)=7% of the same. Assume 17% chance of depression if I take valtrex (valacyclovir)?

No: One can only make such an assumption if one has certainty that his chances depression in his PERSONAL case is indeed those numbers (very hard to prove), and also that such numbers would be additive. Thus, one cannot make such assumptions... it's too much of a generalization. Realize that even if there is a 10% risk, you may actually be a member of the other 90% who never get the affliction. ...Read more

Should I take lysine for my chronic cold sores? If so, as treatment or to prevent? Dosage? Currently take Valtrex (valacyclovir) and use Abreva.

Pay attention: Abreva does very little, not worth the money. L-Lysine is an old scam: it did nothing 40 years ago and it does nothing now. Simple understanding of biochemistry of amino acids is enough to dispel this silly scam. See a dermatologist. Are you sure it is herpes? Valacyclovir can be helpful if dosed properly and is safe. Usual dose is 2gram at very first prodromal symptoms of each attack. Sometimes d ...Read more
