My tailbone hurts sooooo much. What should I do?

Coccydynia: Tailbone pain can occur with or without injury. Only real concern is to exclude a sacral tumor (extremely rare). If bowel/bladder habits normal, probably ok. Treatment included nsaid's, and a sitting pillow. Not a doughnut, but a foam wedge with triangle cutout. This keeps you sitting leaning forward without pressure on the coccyx. If persistent, removal is rarely needed but successful. ...Read more

My tailbone hurts for almost 3 weeks now. If my chiropractor adjusts my hips will it help?

No: Except for placebo type effect. Just as adjusting the fit on someone pants has nothing to do with fixing someones oversized shirt/blouse. You hips are not your tailbone. So make sure you are getting treatment for the actual source of discomfort. Ask questions, and make sure you get explanations that make sense. ...Read more

My tailbone hurts when I move a certain way! I lift my 8 yr old into his wheelchair and carry 6 month old in a car seat? Could it be from lifting?

Yes: You have a 6 month old baby, which can be a lot of lifting, clumsy postures with the car seat, and loss of sleep. You also have a child who is older and heavier, who needs lifting. It must be difficult to find the time to care for your back (walk, stretch and strengthen) if your babies were born by cesarean section, you may need a corset to protect your back. Sometimes, when I sit down, my tailbone hurts a lot, and I feel a little "crack" in it. Is it normal or should I be concerned?

It will get better: Tailbone pain, or coccygodynia, is commonly caused by trauma, and its probably the hardest problem for me to treat personally. It's hard to access the area so there's little to do but that also means that even if there is a fracture or subluxation, usually we recommend patience and activity modification (stand more and use a cushion for sitting). No casts, no injections, maybe an antiinflammatory. ...Read more

Yes: First I want to congratulate your new healthy living program. You have added many more years to your life. The problem at hand is that the fat that was around your coccyx is not there any more to protect it. Using the donut is smart. Give your body time to adjust, it may take about a month. In the meantime taking a medicine like Aleve (naproxen) or Advil may help relieve your discomfort. ...Read more

My tailbone hurts when I sit in certain positions, so much so that I often prefer to stand?

Coccydynia: Pain in the tailbone (coccyx) is most often caused by the simple act of sitting and, therefore, can be quite aggravating. Physical exam, dynamic sitting/standing xrs, mri/ct, and diagnostic injections can help confirm the diagnosis. A sitting cushion with a cutout ('doughnut') can help alleviate pressure while sitting. Surgery via excision (coccygectomy) is rarely ever indicated. ...Read more
