An old acid blocker: Tagamet (cimetidine), Zantac (ranitidine), Pepcid (famotidine) are H2-receptor blockers, introduced by prescription in late 70's/early 80's. All reduce acid production dose-dependently, & promote drug tolerance (requiring increasing doses of drug to block increasing # of receptors with chronic use). Stomach acid reducer: Tagamet is one of the older drugs used for stomach and duodenal ulcers. Before tagamet persons on occasion had to have part of their stomach surgically removed to treat ulcers. Tagamet significantly reduced stomach acid production allowing the ulcer to heal. It is not quite as strong for a better word as say Prilosec which blocks all acid production but at a low cost tagamet 300 may be just fine. ...Read more

Probably okay: The original tagamet was 150 mg the 300 is a double strength. Its best to ask your physician who prescribed it but if this is simply for acid reflux or occasional gastritis its probably safe. ...Read more
