It is expensive: unless your insurance covers it but many havre a copay. Synvisc (hylan g-f 20): Synvisc (hylan g-f 20) is an animal product, made out of the rooster's comb (red object on the rooster's head). One of the side effects is allergic reaction, especially if one is allergic to chicken products (eggs, etc). This is fairy uncommon, but it can result in a painful, swollen joint. Other potential side effects are infection from the injection itself and local skin/soft tissue reaction. ...Read more
Similar: The two medicines are both considered viscosupplementation. They are injected for mild-moderate arthritis to improve the lubrication of the joint, more normally recreate the viscosity of knee joint fluid, and hydrate the remaining cartilage. Synvisc (hylan g-f 20) can be given in a one time dose or 3 doses separated by a week each. Hyalgan, euflexxa, orthovisc, supartz are given in multiple doses (3-5). ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

Very off label: There are studies looking at viscoelastic supplementation(think synvisc) is undergoing trial for some forms of spinal degenerative pain but it isn't routine done presently. In the end, Synvisc (hylan g-f 20) is actually quite safe to be injected in many locations, but the bigger issue is if it actually helps! Good luck. ...Read more
I get synvisc (hylan g-f 20) inj' bilat knees yearly at the VA(one shot each). They tell me it last a year, but I've read you can have every 6 months. Who's right ?
Synvisc (hylan g-f 20): You can get the shots every six months but I typically recommend that if the shot last a year then there is no need to get them every six months. There is possibly a ceiling effect for the shots when they may not be effective. ...Read more

Had orthovisc last round and worked great. Doc said to switch to synvisc (hylan g-f 20) and just had first injection and feel burning and sharp pain 3 days after. Should i go back to orthovisc? What's wrong?
Sort of...: Synvisc (hylan g-f 20) has a very thick consistency, so while it probably does not help with regeneration of the cartilage like we would like, it does help to lubricate the knee and distract the joint. I generally tell people it will not eliminate the need for a knee replacement, but it may delay it for up to several years. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

Depends: Synvisc (hylan g-f 20) is effective for early to moderate osteoarthritis. 80% report decreased knee pain. 2% risk of synovitis reaction, that resembles infection. Advanced osteoarthritis has never even been adequately studied with product, but results are expected to be less predictable. Knee replacement results are good to excellent for 95% of patients lasting 20-30 years. Replace if advanced. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

My grandpa is 80yr old, wether synvisc (hylan g-f 20) injection for arthritis will be efective for him or any complicatnswill come ?Plz someone reply me
Maybe: Synvisc (hylan g-f 20) is an off label use in the hip. Insurance typically does not pay for it in the hip for this reason. It tends to work very well in the knee and the hip for mild to moderate arthritis although typically it is given in the 2cc mixture in the hip and not the 6cc synvisc-one mixture. It helps to recreate the normal viscosity of the joint fluid / hydrate remaining cartilage (covering on bone). ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
