What are the common side effects of synthroid (thyroxine)?

What are the common side effects of synthroid (thyroxine)?

There are none: Synthroid (thyroxine) is a man-made replacement for your own thryroid hormone. There are no side effects per se because the drug will bind to the same receptors that your thyroid hormone binds to so the body does not use the drug as a synthetic. It is possible to take too much Synthroid (thyroxine) and then have effects of excess thyroid like rapid heart beat. ...Read more

Weights loss as a side effects of thyroxine use — how much is too much?

When TSH is low: People who take thyroxine for simple hypothyroidism should have normal TSH to be safe. They should not loose weight, unless their prior weight gain was due to hypothyroidism. Taking too much thyroxine can cause atrial fibrillation and osteoporosis. On the other hand people with thyroid cancer are sometimes given a slight excess of thyroxine to prevent the cancer from returning. ...Read more

How many weeks after beginning 25mcg of Synthroid (thyroxine) can side effects occur?

How many weeks after beginning 25mcg of Synthroid (thyroxine) can side effects occur?

Thyroid treatment: 25 mcg of levothyroxine is a very low dose; a normal dose for hypothyroidism is typically much higher. The only side effect is taking too much (hyperthyroidism: palpitations, sweating, tremor, etc) or not taking enough (hypothyroid: fatigue, cold, etc). But such symptoms can be from other things. You need to get levels checked and talk to the doctor who initially prescribed this. ...Read more

If you're on Synthroid (thyroxine) for hypothyroidism and having side effects what other med would you prescribe?

If you're on Synthroid (thyroxine) for hypothyroidism and having side effects what other med would you prescribe?

What side effects?: Hi. The only "side effects" would be if the l-thyroxine dose isn't right. L-thyroxine is the hormone the human thyroid gland secretes. The thyroid and its treatment gets blamed for more stuff it has nothing to do with than any other hormone system in the body. Be cautious in assigning blame to l-thyroxine...you're probably incorrect in your assessment. Any thyroid hormone prep can be used instead. ...Read more

No side effects.: Thyroxine is a replacement hormone that takes the place of your naturally occurring hormone. Thyroxine can give expected effects if too much or too little is taken but these are not "side effects." keep your TSH on the low end of normal — say below 2.5 and all will be well. ...Read more

Been taking Synthroid (thyroxine) for about a yearany side effects that I need to know about? Also, was taking it during 2nd 3rd trimester, she "shivers" sometimes

Correct dose?: Make sure you're on the correct dose. Get your levels checked. If they're ok, it's like your own thyroid was doing the job -- no side effects since it's just replacement. ...Read more

Thyroid: You don't normally remove the thyroid if it is underactive, you replace it with thyroxine, not sure what is your thyroid problem, and what are your side effects, but you need to discuss them with your doctor. An endocrinologist will be best equipped to treat your condition. ...Read more

Borderline hypothyroid (TSH varies btw 2.7 to 4) n PCOS. Don't want to take Synthroid (thyroxine) coz of side effects, what else can I do to keep energy & mood up?

My TSH levels are at a 4.25. I am currently taking 50mcg of synthroid (thyroxine). My doctor upped my dose to 75mcg. I am afraid of side effects like racing heart?

Take it: Adjusting a thyroid medicine is both an art and science. You need to be "euthryroid" meaning normal tsh, t3, (liothyronine) T4 and must feel well as the normal range is made for a population and not your particular body. Fine adjustments must be made between you and a trusted doctor with an aim to make you feel well and healthier and avoid side effects such as palpitations. So go-slow. ...Read more

Just started on synthroid (thyroxine) (finally!!!) how long before symptoms improve (cold intolerance, brittle nails, hair falling out, constipation? What side effects should I watch for or expect? How long before dose increase?

I usually advise: My thyroid patients that it may be SEVERAl WEEKS for them to notice a "difference" and THAT is when I re-check the tests at 2 weeks to begin with!
The "cold intolerance " is usually the first to "respond"
BE PATIENT!!! It may take several visits before your problem is "sorted out" Hope this helps!
