What would cause an inguinal/mesh hernia repair to fail? What are the symptoms of failure?

Hernia failure

Groin
Hernia recurrence is 1-5% after surgery. Poor tissue, obesity, steroid medications, infections and possibly return to heavy work too soon can be some possible reasons. Many causes are unknown. Symptoms would be the same swelling, bulge & discomfort at the hernia site. Would need a physical examination with your surgeon.

A doctor told me that scar tissue is the reason of pain in surgical side of my hernia repair. if I get it removed surgically will it cause pain again?

Last resort

Hiatal_hernia
Inguinodynia, also known as hernia post-operative chronic pain syndrome, occurs between 1-10% of hernia repairs. Most resolve within 1 yr, but more severely affected patients require injections with local anesthetics and corticosteroids to reduce or eradicate the neuropathy symptoms. A minority of neuropathy patients are a failure on medical therapy and therefore require surgical intervention.

No.

There are many different kinds of mesh available for hernia repair. Some products are derived from animal products, or from cell culture products. Each product has specific uses, so talk with your surgeon to see what meets your needs.

Why is an open inguinal hernia repair better than a laparoscopic hernia repair?

It may not be...

Inguinal_hernia
Inguinal hernia repair is technically challenging, open or laparoscopic. The laparoscopic repair is relatively new and not all surgeons are comfortable performing repair this way. Statistically, the failure rate of open hernia repair is between 1-5% depending on sugeon expertise. Conversely, laparoscopic failure is much higher up to 10% and more depending on experience. More experience=less failur

I had a hernia repair ten years ago. Recently at the incision sight in my groin I have been having some pain. Can the mess need replaced?

Maybe

Hernia_repair
A hernia repair may last a lifetime; however, it is not the original. If you have been exertional with lifting, hefting, pushing, pulling, etc.; then it may be possible you have ripped open the hernia again. There are some people who have had 3 hernia repair surgeries in their lives; but with the more recent use of mesh in the repairs; failure is less common. Look for a bulge, & maybe get it seen.

Dr. Tony T. Ho answered:

How can I know where the infection is coming from? 4 weeks post large incisional hernia repair with infected fluid drainage. Mesh or tissue?

Possibly both

Hernia_repair
It is exceedingly hard to determine if a post-operative infection spares any prosthetic material that was implanted, including mesh; if the infection approaches the material, we assume it is infected. Due to the risk of treatment failure if infected foreign material is left in place, it is generally recommended by ID to remove any prosthetic material in these situations.

What symptoms would I have if I had a reoccurrence 4 1/2 months post - op iguinal laprascopic hernia repair ?

A bulge

Hernia_repair
The clear sign of a recurent hernia is a bulge or protrusion in the same area as the previous repair. While that might be associated with some pain, pain alone is more likely post surgical at four months. If you are worried go back and see the surgeon who did the previous repair
