Why is it that jaundice is a symptom of gallstones?

Liver Blockage: On occasion, gallstones may exit the gallbladder and get stuck in the tube that connects the liver to the intestinal tract, called the bile duct. Obstruction of the bile duct may impair liver function, leading to jaundice and abnormal elevation of the liver enzymes. My neighbors say my new doctor tends to overdiagnose everyone. He thinks I might have gallstones. Can you tell me the symptoms?

Biliary Colic: Gallstones may cause acute attacks of right-sided or midline upper abdominal pain. The pain tends to be severe, non-burning, non-cramping, and can last for hours; it often radiates around into the back+/-shoulder. The pain often follows a meal, especially fatty foods. Associated symptoms include nausea+/-vomiting and bloating. If this sounds familiar, I advise an ultrasound to confirm the dx.
