How often is a selitoric bone island cancer? ?? Please answer

Rare but more data: Calling bone island is based on a non-aggressive appearance which is careful-speak for something that is well defined and does not extend beyond the bone, no soft tissue component, and usually incidentally found (as opposed to benign, which no careful radiologist will commit to). There is a small chance that some of these are osteosarcoma, but unlikely ...Read more

Is there anything that will relieve the pain in my hip and leg? My x-ray shows a 1 cm bone island in the right ileum.

Need to Know More: While the X-Ray was helpful not showing arthritis or a fracture, Bone Islands usually do not hurt. More information is needed to guide the evaluation. Where is the pain, is it always there, what does it feel like? An X-Ray was only a start you probably need more evaluation. Even just giving a doctor more information will help. At first glance sounds like sciatica, but can't tell for sure. ...Read more

What treatment do I need for a sclerotic lesion at the neck of the fibula due to a bone island I have pain is there a treatment for it plz?

Work up?: An MRI can determine if a lesion in bone is an active process. Many times, sclerotic lesions in bones, or bone islands, are innocuous, and cause no problems. If there is pain associated with the lesion, then it may signal a more serious problem. Seek care or additional workup. ...Read more

My MRI results (on hips) came back with symmetrical effusion present, bone island present and red marrow conversion present. Should I be concerned?

Why joint effusions: Conversion of bone marrow in the extremities from red to yellow is normal maturation process. Marrow reconversion is present when expected yellow marrow is replaced with active red marrow, tends to occur at times of physiologic stress. Bone island is normal dense island of bone. Joint effusions can be seen in rheumatoid arthritis, other rheumatology conditions. Infection and tumor usually unilateral. ...Read more

I have illiac lesion -bone island on l hip. I am in a lot of pain and have trouble walking. What type of dr should I be seeing? (i was w a general md)

PCP can evaluate: A bone island is often an "incidental" finding on an x-ray, and after obtaining a proper history of the location and nature of your pain and an adequate physical exam, an MRI or bone scan can be ordered first to determine the source and cause of the pain. You may want to see a physiatrist or orthopedic surgeon then depending on what is causing your pain. ...Read more

I have pain that occurs daily when I walk in my right leg just below my knee. X-ray showed a bone island and I have had benign tumour in same leg..

Pain in leg? Causes?: There can be many causes for pain in the leg. It could come from the bones, muscles or the nerves. Only a careful exam by your doctor and an X-ray can help you to determine the cause. The doctors you have seen so far can monitor you and treat you with some pain medication as long as there is no serious defect in your bones of lower right leg. 27yo female, 7mm suspected bone island on anterior humeral head with shoulder/upper arm pain. Not on xrays 2 yrs ago. Likely followup tests/treatment?

Tested?: A bone scan can be done to make sure it is a benign bone island and not something more worrisome. If it turns out to be a normal scan, then recheck of the X-ray in 6 - 12 months is the usual follow up to ensure the benign nature of the lesion has been correctly diagnosed. More tests to find out why your shoulder hurts may be indicated..... Like a shoulder MRI Arthrogram. See your orthopedist. ...Read more

What does 8 mm bone Island on L4 mean on an MRI? Also says Facet Hypertrophy narrows lateral recesses at L4-L5 and L5-S1. My doctor said MRI is normal. Never mentioned any of this to me until I got a copy.

MRI: MRI must be interpreted in the context of your symptoms. A small bone island may have been a sequestrum from an old infection in your spine. Lateral recess narrowing from facet arthropathy is a fancy way of saying wear and tear has started to block an area that is a thorofare for your nerves to exit your spine. If you have radiculopathy radiating pain this could be the cause. No symptoms, "normal" ...Read more

I have a Bakers cyst measuring 4.4 cm and "bone island" in the femur on right leg/knee. I also have a partial torn meniscus. Is this serious?

Not life threatening: Not serious in the form of being life threatening. The bone island is likely an incidental finding. A bakers cyst in an adult is usually related to an underlying internal derangement of the knee, such as the meniscal tear you are describing. If you are having trouble it is reasonably simple to take care of both arthroscopically. Don't hesitate to be seen. ...Read more

I have had kidney cancer. I just got my CT scan back and they report a lesion on my right ilium bone possible a bone island. Could this be cancer?

Possibly: Bone is a relatively common site of spread of kidney cancer. The odds that this is true in your case depend on the stage and grade of your original cancer and the radiographic appearance. If the radiologist described it as a bone island that makes it less likely that it is cancer. Discussing this with your doctor is a good idea, and the need for a biopsy or other further testing can be determined. ...Read more

Bone spurs/island: Bone spurs and islands have different causes. Bone spurs or osteophytes are thickened areas of bone that form at areas of bone stress, injury, wear. Common in arthritic conditions. Contrary to its name, most spurs are smooth, not sharp and are asymptomatic. Bone islands are areas of thicker or cortical bone that are found in areas of softer bone (cancellous) and occur from birth and are benign. ...Read more

What are symptoms of bone fusion pain?

What are symptoms of bone fusion pain?

Timing: Pain after having a fusion depends on multiple items: such as how long it has been since your surgery, if the pain is at the donor site for the fusion, and if you had degeneration previously. I would imagine this is related to a spinal fusion and you are continuing to have pain after your fusion healed. If you had degeneration at other levels prior to surgery; this pain can be from those levels. ...Read more
