Your carotid artery: Is not blocked. Blocked carotid does not hurt. You may have some sort of infection or inflammation involving your ear or lymphnodes in neck or neck muscle spasms or even cervical strain or sprain.

Artery (Definition)

Arteries are defined as blood vessels which carry blood away from the heart (to either the body or lungs). Arteries: higher pressure, thicker walls, stretch (pulse) with each heart contraction & deliver blood to the arterioles which control the flow to individual capillaries. Veins are blood vessels which carry blood from capillaries back to the heart (body to right heart; ...Read more

Could the carotid arteries clear themselves or with massaging my neck?

Could the carotid arteries clear themselves or with massaging my neck?

Not likely: A stenosis of the carotid arteries as in any other artery is a process that takes years to develop and is referred to as plaque. Plaque that has developed in the artery does not go away on its own. It can be removed reliably and safely with endarterectomy of the carotid artery. Massaging the carotid arteries will likely not help the situation and may dislodge unstable plaque making it dangerous.

What would cause spasms in your neck or carotid artery?

What would cause spasms in your neck or carotid artery?

Carotid spasms: Carotid spasms occur only with direct manipulation of the artery itself, such as during an operation or during a catheterization. Carotid artery spasms will not cause pain that one would attribute to the neck in any way.

Stand up and neck start pulsate super strong, do the carotid arteries expand or narrow? Took BP and was normal, shouldn't it be high?

Stand up and neck start pulsate super strong, do the carotid arteries expand or narrow? Took BP and was normal, shouldn't it be high?

Pulsate: With blood flow and pressure, the artery walls will expand with each heart beat, then relax and deflate a bit, and the cycle continues with each heart beat. When you stand up, people can sometimes get a low blood pressure, due to the positional change, and the heart may try to compensate by increasing its heart rate, and therefore, this may be more noticeable in your neck.

Well, yes: Cannot say in your particular case without direct exam. AND large vessel autoimmune diseases are treated with high dose steroids. High dose steroids are effective in large vessel disease. Other therapies (anti-rejection drugs, monoclonal antibodies) are being evaluated and likely to be helpful, but are not known definitely to work yet.

So is it impossible to feel normal sized lymphnodes in neck along carotid artery? Feels like very small knots but I have very sensitive feeling.......

So is it impossible to feel normal sized lymphnodes in neck along carotid artery? Feels like very small knots but I have very sensitive feeling.......

Nodes: There is great variation in what people feel and interpret from their sensations. The best you can get is your own sensations unless you become a physician and palpate a large range of necks with known lymph node status. Other 'knot' sensations are also possible.

When doing duplex of the carotid arteries, how high up the neck do u see? Where does the sight usually end? Can u see in level with the cheekbones?

When doing duplex of the carotid arteries, how high up the neck do u see? Where does the sight usually end? Can u see in level with the cheekbones?

Usually up to: The area where the arteries enter the skull. So, no, it does not image the area of cheekbones. It is useful test because atherosclerotic carotid disease is very common where common carotid artery bifurcates into external and internal branches.

Can 30% plaque in your carotid artery cause pain in the carotid/neck area?

Can 30% plaque in your carotid artery cause pain in the carotid/neck area?

Not a sign of plaque: 30% block in your carotid artery will not cause pain in your neck area. It is an indicator that it can compromise the blood flow to the brain if gets worse. One has to control the LDL levels in blood and bring it down with statins and diet.If it it prgresses to 60% or more, than you will need endarterectomy and reduce the chances of it leading to stroke.

My left front of my neck where carotid artery is spasms and hurts the carotid artery feels swollen and I think there's a knot. I'm scared?

My left front of my neck where carotid artery is spasms and hurts the carotid artery feels swollen and I think there's a knot. I'm scared?

Torticollis: The Sternoclidomasoid" Muscle goes into spasm. I believe this what is happening to you. It is a benign condition. Nothing to worry about, although it is painful and cannot turn neck in all direction. Rx Anti Infalmmatory like Ibuprofen Ice application, Local Muscle recant like Bengay /Flexall/Deep heating and Oral Muscle Relaxant will help you. And if not better in 24 H. get examined by your MD.

If I have had an ultrasound of my carotid artery and it's unremarkable, what could a pulsating lump in my neck be?

If I have had an ultrasound of my carotid artery and it's unremarkable, what could a pulsating lump in my neck be?

Also: Could also be a tortuous (curved) carotid. This may have not been reported out on the report if it otherwise looked like a normal variant.

How common is it to see carotid arteries pulsing through your neck?

It can be.: If you are able to see your carotid artery pulse in your neck, you're likely quite thin. Rarely a prominent, pulsatile carotid artery in the neck is a sign of a carotid artery aneurysm, an abnormal englargement of the artery which can lead to problems such as stroke or rupture/bleeding. This would be rare in a 43 year old without a history of trauma. See a vascular surgeon to be sure.

Is there anything that can cause pain to shoot trough the carotid artery in the neck to the head?

Is there anything that can cause pain to shoot trough the carotid artery in the neck to the head?

Nerve pain: Cannot imagine that pain goes through an artery, though nerves do travel in similar paths. Possibly a trapped nerve in your upper back is causing the shooting pain. Seek pain management advice, or neurology. My be that a steroid injection (seek a physician who is comfortable with neck injections - not all are) would help, or you may need surgery as a last resort. An MRI may be in your future..

My child has been referred to a neurosurgeon due to a narrow carotid artery in the neck. Why is that?

Carotid artery: The carotid artery is one of the main suppliers of blood to the brain and narrowing within this vessel is a major cause of stroke in the us. Narrowing is often found in older adults and a result of atherosclerosis, but in children the cause is commonly fibromuscular dysplasia. Treatment depends on whether your child has had stroke-like symptoms. Vascular surgeons and neurosurgeons can treat fmd.

Headaches scare me cause I always think I'm having an anurysm and my carotid artery feels enlarged and it's beating really hard and my Neck hurts?

Again?: I believe you have asked this question several times in different ways. You need to see someone to get a handle on your symptoms. I suspect that anxiety may be contributing significantly to this.

Not necessarily: It would be easier and cheaper to see a surgeon experienced in evaluating neck masses. He or she may be able to tell you that you don't need anything right now.
