For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low fat milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Bloody BM: Blood in your bowel movements should be characterized. Is it blood streaked. Small bowel bleeding usually causes black bowel movements unless you are having a large bleed. Right lower quadrant pain can be due to muscular causes, e.g. Hernias, gyn causes, gu causes, e.g. Stones, GI causes including inflammatory bowel disease (crohn's, ulcerative colitis), infection. Hemorrhoids: Blood on the outside of a stool is most often from bleeding from hemorrhoids. For someone 24 years old that would be the most likely cause. Depends: Gastritis should improve with dietary modifications, acid blockers, and possible H pylori treatment; if not, further evaluation may be needed. Colon polyps should be followed with colonoscopy anywhere from 6 months to 5 years later, depending on type of polyp and confidence in that it was completely removed. Internal hems bleed and the source needs to be addressed - constipation, straining, etc ...Read more

Melena: Black tarry stool, otherwise known as melena, can sometimes be due to diverticulitis, but certainly can be a sign of bleeding in the upper digestive tract. You should share this new finding with your doctor and see if it affects her working differential. You may need tests to rule out an upper gastrointestinal source of bleeding.
