No one in my family has ever been diagnosed with hemochromatosis or had any of the symptoms; how could I possibly have this disease?

No one in my family has ever been diagnosed with hemochromatosis or had any of the symptoms; how could I possibly have this disease?

Your parents would be carriers but completely unaffected. What's more, only 10-15% of folks with two mutations ever get sick. Same goes for hemochromatosis support groups (http://goo.Gl/8yvkzb). As for symptoms, check out http://www.Mayoclinic.Com/health/polycythemia-vera/ds00919 & http://www.Mayoclinic.Com/health/hemochromatosis/ds00455. ...Read more

Please see doctor: You really need to see your doctor to determine what is causing the bronzing you've described. I previously mentioned hemochromatosis because those who have it may appear bronzed. However, it is not a common disorder. You merit a comprehensive evaluation by a physician who will take a thorough history and perform a physical exam to determine if you need any testing. Best wishes! ...Read more
