If you have a fever: Or cough persists beyond one week I would see a doctor for evaluation. It may be viral but if there is a fever or any colored mucous it could be bacterial and require antibiotics. Hope that helps ...Read more

The cough reflex is a protective mechanism that uses muscles in your throat and chest to expel mucous and saliva that may contain pathogens that would otherwise possibly be inhaled via aerosol or to expel pathogens infecting the throat and respiratory system. Cough benefits the host by reducing load and benefits the pathogen which may then spread via aerosol. ...Read more

I have a heavy cough with yellow phlegm my head pounds with each cough. Now I'm losing my voice. No other symptoms, what could this be?

Cough: Cough with sputum production is bronchitis. Paroxysmal coughing can lead to headache and chest/abdominal muscle discomfort. Headache could also be a symptom of sinusitis which can make cough and sputum production worse. If symptoms don't improve with otc remedies or worsen (fever/ chills/nausea with vomiting which precludes you from being able to stay hydrated/etc)-see a doctor! ...Read more

Does pneumonia ever go away on its own? I had a horrible cough, chills and clammy skin. I was going to go to the doctor after a few days, but the symptoms started getting better and i’m almost recovered now. Did I have pneumonia, or was it probably someth

Yes: Most pneumonias are caused by viruses and they will be self limited meaning they will get better over time as your own immune system kicks in. Even bacterial pneumonias may get better without treatment, but will often respond more quickly with treatment with an appropriate antibiotic. ...Read more

Showed symptoms of a cold, had cough with phlegm, pressure in head. Now all I have is headache, weakness, and a mild cough slightly short of breath. Help?

Showed symptoms of a cold, had cough with phlegm, pressure in head. Now all I have is headache, weakness, and a mild cough slightly short of breath. Help?

Go see your doctor: Most colds are viral in nature. In other words, they won't respond to antibiotics. However, shortness of breath shouldn't be ignored. While this may be reactive airway disease (variant of asthma), you'll need to go see your doctor for diagnosis ; management (inhalers). Headache ; weakness (where?) can be a sign of not getting enough oxygen (or other condition). So don't delay. Go see your doc! ...Read more

A virus: It sounds like a viral infection that is resolving, and the lump is likely a lymph node. If you begin to worsen, or the lump doesn't go away (or continues to grow) you should seek medical attention. ...Read more

Just barely started to recover from a head cold, other symptoms improving but cough is quite worse. Not a chest cough, mostly throat one I think. Ideas?

Post nasal drip.: You started to recover from cold but got caught with the post nasal drip. Cold can cause it. Try an over the counter sinus rinse and may even try some Sudafed. If that doesn't work you may try Nasacort (triamcinolone). It used to be a Perscription but now is over the counter. If it doesn't get better than it is something more such as sinus infection. Contact to your doctor and see if antibiotics are necessary. ...Read more

I've had what I believe is flu and in4th day. Have had severe night sweats on night 2 and 3. Is this common. Symptoms are cough, aching head joints?

Influenza: The symptoms you describe are classic for influenza and while people talk about a "touch" of flu it is often more like a sledge hammer. At this point I would continue to treat symptomatically with Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen and hopefully in a few more days you'll feel better. Next year you should get a flu shot of you didn't this year. ...Read more

My 9 yr old son has been told he has dryeye and allergies! Symptoms r a cough red eyes rolling eyes and head & sniffing? What do u thnk please give info

See a pediatrician: A child who rolls his eyes, his head, and sniffs off and on may have tics, which are exaggerated habits. Of course he may have allergies and dry eyes, too. The allergies and eye symptoms may "encourage" the tics to continue because the symptoms make him sense that there is some discomfort in the eyes. Some doctors check for strep throat when a child has new tics with cold/allergy/throat symptoms. ...Read more

Can you have a sinus infection without a stuffy, runny nose, cough or fever? Basically the only symptom being head/ face/ eye pressure

Yes it is possible: Yes, one can have symptoms of sinusitis without having cold like symptoms. I have treated patients for sinusitis after they have presented to me for periocular, forhead and sometimes even unusual complaints. I use ct-scan if I am suspecting sinusitis even if they have been treated for presumed inflammation. These patients may present with pressure around the eyes and even unusual headaches. ...Read more

Infection: Sounds miserable! Many different kinds of infections produce these same flu-like symptoms but if there are no respiratory symptoms emerging by now then influenza is unlikely. Look for other possible sites of infection. ...Read more

I have been dealing with what seems to be a sinus infection. With symptoms of ear pain, fullness in face/head sinus discharge, congestion, cough and headaches on and off and I seem to be swallowing mucus and shortly after my throat begins to become sore.

Need to be seen: Abx would be the easiest way to treat a sinus infection. But if you want to do something at home, I would recommend sinus rinse 2-3 times per day. That should also clear a sinus infection as well, but it will take longer ...Read more
