Is there a higher risk for side effects when switching to symbicort (budesonide and formoterol) 160/4.5 from 80/4.5?

Is there a higher risk for side effects when switching to symbicort (budesonide and formoterol) 160/4.5 from 80/4.5?

Yes, but saves lives: Higher doses of inhaled steroids are associated with more local side effects such as hoarseness and thrush. These can be reduced with use of a spacer with your inhaler. Higher doses are also associated with an slight increased risk of pneumonia and may have an effect on your bone density over time. However, uncontrolled asthma is associated with a poor quality of life and increased mortality. ...Read more

Which is better: symbicort (budesonide and formoterol) or advair? Which generally has less side effects?

Which is better: symbicort (budesonide and formoterol) or advair? Which generally has less side effects?

The big difference is the form - advair is more an inhaled powder formulation, where symbicort (budesonide and formoterol) is a mist inhaler more like your rescue inhaler works if you use one with asthma or copd.So it really boils down to what your insurance covers and preference type. ...Read more

Just started dulera. Was on symbicort (budesonide and formoterol). Is side-effect profile similar? Any more likely to have sinus symptoms on dulera? How about cataracts?

Very close: I don't think the side effect profile is any different between the two but the actual side effects will be depended on the total dose of steroid included. There is a minor risk for cataracts with any inhaled steroid but this is a minor issue when compared to uncontrolled asthma. As for response, some people do prefer one over another- a toss-up. ...Read more

I've been taking Symbicort (budesonide and formoterol) 80 for asthma for several weeks and I have been increasingly angry, depressed and anxious. Is this a normal side effect?

Possibly: This medication has a long acting agent similar to Adrenalin as a main component. Adrenalin is our natural stress hormone and readies our body for running away or fighting a threat. This may be something you are more sensitive to than desired. Talk your meds over with your doc and see if an alternate would be okay.Do not stop it without consulting your doc. ...Read more
