No.: A single swollen tonsil is concerning for infection deep in spaces under tonsil. Generally this produces one sided pain and swelling. Dangly thing in back of throat gets pushed out of midline and you generally get very sick. If this happens seek care asap. Infectious or not?: If you have strep tonsillitis, it is recommended you receive antibiotics. Swollen tonsils can be acute (sudden onset, usually from infection, rarely from tumors) or chronic (usually just someone with large tonsils). If there is some pain, you can start with saline gargles or using a "water pik" to rinse out the tonsil crypts. Sometimes oral steroids (rx) can help. See an ENT if they stay large. ...Read more
