No injury?: Assuming you haven't injured that finger somehow (sometimes it is hard to remember...might have seemed like nothing at the time)... I'm thinking things that aren't exactly "serious", but that doesn't mean it doesn't hurt! Possibly tendinitis in that finger, or a bit of arthritis in the joint. Try using an ice pack, and reducing movement, maybe w/ a splint. If it continues, I would get an x-ray. ...Read more

Hand pain: I do not know how old you are. However pain in hands would make me consider Carpal tunnel. Thyroid problem another thought or some type of problem causing increased fluid retention. See your provider. ...Read more

A couple of thought: Your symptoms suggest a couple things. Inflammatory. Our thoughts include such diagnoses as arthritis, myositis are a couple thoughts. When you see a rheumatologist we will look for a variety of inflammatory causes. You do not describe swelling so I think we also have to look at noninflammatory musculoskeletal problems. Your evaluation will include this. ...Read more

The palm area below my index fingers on both hands is slightly swollen and my fingers are stiff. Could this be finger tendonitis from overuse?

The palm area below my index fingers on both hands is slightly swollen and my fingers are stiff. Could this be finger tendonitis from overuse?

See below:: Possibly yes, but it happening on both sides at the same time is uncommon. It could be a number of other things in a 35 yo female, like rheumatoid. Common things like a ganglion cysts, trigger fingers etc, would be more likely cause of your problem.
Consulting your ortho or hand surgeon would be beneficial for you. ...Read more

MOVING fingers fully: After surgery for CTS or trigger finger is very important. I always tell my surgical patients that when they return to the office after surgery I want to see them make a full fist AND straighten their fingers out so they can lay their hand flat. Speak to your surgeon to make sure you are doing the right thing, but most agree on this. Not "overdo" it BUTlike touching ones toes, after it is easier ...Read more

Sprain vs fracture: You either sprained the finger (tendon injury) or fractured the bone. You need to see a physician to evaluate it to see if an x-ray is needed. For now you can ice it. You can also take Ibuprofen to help pain and swelling as long as you do not have a history of a stomach ulcer, kidney or liver disease, or high blood pressure. It is more likely sprained but get it checked. ...Read more

I hit my hand on a doorway while moving 3 days ago. My index finger knuckle is bruised swollen stiff and tender when I touch it. I can see my knuckle but it is more pronounced Sprain or Fracture?

Get a X-ray: The only sure way to tell a fracture from a sprain is with x-ray, with several views. And on occasions, with repeat films a few days later, when initial x-ray was negative for fracture. In other words, just by looking at the bruising and swelling, only Superman can tell if it is broken. ...Read more

Trigger finger?: If it is swollen along the palm in line with the finger, or you get occasional locking (unable to move the finger), it could be a trigger finger. Many times a cortisone shot can help. ...Read more

Finger: It could be a finger sprain. It's not clear how it was injured. Did something fall on it or did you fall or did something else happen? When did it happen? If it was less than a week ago, then this could normal healing. It could also be something else such as a fracture. So it depends on how and when this injury occurred. X-rays would help determine if there has been a fracture. ...Read more

Two days ago my index finger got extremely stiff out of the blue, swollen, red and looks bruised. I did not injure it in any way what could this be?

Two days ago my index finger got extremely stiff out of the blue, swollen, red and looks bruised. I did not injure it in any way what could this be?

Many possibilities: Need to see the finger to understand if this is serious or not. From your description could be anything from a minor cut/ leading to low grade infection (pain/swelling) to acute arthritis (Gout), to a septic arthritis, or an advancing skin infection (often bacteria enter the finger from a small cut or at the nailbed). Finger infections can be severe, lead to tenosynovitis. Needs evaluation. ...Read more

Is my finger broken? A basketball hit it. A day later its stiff, cant bend all the way, swollen, bruised, dull pain, and tender on knuckle, sharpish pain when bending.

X-ray?: The only way to know for sure is X-ray. That being said fractures are usually created by mechanism of force. A basketball hitting your finger under normal speed and force should not fracture a finger. Rest Ice elevation and gentle mobilization will likely reveal that this has been a sprain at worst. Taping finger to its neighbor may provide comfort. ...Read more

I cut my finger, left index finger medially at the ip joint and it is sore swollen and stiff after a month. Is my joint infected?

Not likely: It would be unusual for a joint infection to present one month later. Lacerations to the fingers can be stiff, sore and swollen for months. Keep your finger moving and try scar desensitisation massage by massaging the area with hand cream three or four times a day. ...Read more

I have tightness and stiffness in my fingers and hands in the mornings?

AM stiffness: This is a common symptom in people who have arthritis of different kinds. Impossible to say what kind without an exam. For most people the stiffness works itself out after a little while. Hot showers or baths help. Gentle opening and closing of the fingers usually helps. Can be a nuisance but usually not much can be done about it. ...Read more
