So, see a Dr ASAP: It's not likely, but if you do - it's treatable and only will kill you if you wait too long - so don't! Have an exam - if it's not - you'll feel much better - not freak out - and maybe stop smoking as a bonus! That might be a really nice outcome overall. Have it checked. Otitis externa is a: likely diagnosis with a story like that. Otitis can become quite serious relatively quickly. See your primary MD or urgent clinic for evaluation. Possibly allergy: Since the redness and swelling involve both ear lobes, infection or cellulitis is less likely, unless there is reason to think otherwise. Allergy, possibly to something he consumed before going to bed or bug bites may cause such a reaction. If there are no bumps, and remains non tender without any systemic symptoms, I would try OTC anti allergy medicine and observe. ...Read more

Evaluation: In an 8 y/o, especially with lack of cold symptoms, I would be concerned about strep throat. You don't have to have red tonsils or white patches to have strep throat. You gave it couple of days (which is good for strep -studies show if you wait a day or two before treating less likely to recur), so now it's time to see if it is strep, and have quick exam to make sure no enlargement of liver/spleen ...Read more
