I have a cold for the last week. A few days ago, I went to the doctor & was given Augmentin. Took 3 doses so far (a day & a half), but have very painful swollen glands in throat/neck. When will the antibiotic kick in & the swollen glands feel better?

A day or two: Before it usually gets better, it can be viral pharyngitis, and the Augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) won't work with it, give it until the end of the day, salt water gargles and pain killers like acetaminophen, rest and fluids, if no improvement, call/see your doctor for re-assessment, best wishes ...Read more

Tonsillitis?: If the gland is inside it could be tonsillitis. If it is outside we call it adenopathy. They are lymph glands which the body uses in response to inflammation or infection or foreign body irritation. It still could be infection in nature, and strep is no the only cause of infection. Go see your doctor and be evaluated, especially to make sure no abscess and be treated appropriately. ...Read more

Sore gland on left side of neck. Feels swollen compared to right side. Painful when burp, feels like lump in throat on that side.. Why could this be?

Swollen Gland: It sounds like your submandibular salivary gland. If so, it can get infected or have a stone caught in the duct that empties salava under the tongue. It could also be a lymph node. See an ENT specialist for a definitive diagnosis. ...Read more
