Finger infection: I am sorry to hear about your mother's pain, and symptoms. She is at increased risk for infections due to diabetes and being on dialysis. Symptoms of swelling and pus drainage sound consistent with a nail bed infection, however swelling of the entire finger with pain sound as though an infection could be spreading. The? Is confusing-: -but it sounds like the tip of the finger is swollen & tight as well as numb. If there was a penetrating wound, like a thorn... It could B an infection in the pulp of the tip, but these initially R very painful. If it's more in the joint area, it could B a tendon sheath infec. Maybe: Obvious question is did you injure it? If so probably just jammed, and depending on the severity of injury, could be broken. if no injury mechanism then it could be from arthritis causing swelling or decreased blood flow which obviously sounds dangerous, but there benign causes of this.
