What does it mean if my 5yr old son woke up with ping pong size swollen lymph nodes on both sides of his neck?

50/50 strep or viral

Enlarged_lymph_nodes
Very large anterior cervical lymph nodes are seen particularly in strep throat. A fever would almost certainly be going along with that. You can also see very large lymph nodes with mononucleosis and other viruses so in itself is just a warning sign to keep a close eye probably get a doctor to look at Him and do a throat culture.

Dr. Hung Khong answered:

Can a left ear melanoma give swollen lymph nodes on both sides of the neck, on the back of the head left side and also on the top of both shoulders?

Certainly

Swollen_glands
Melanoma can travel anywhere in the body, no matter where it originated. So, yes, a left ear melanoma can travel to lymph nodes in your neck (cervical nodes) on both sides, including the top (supraclavicular) and bottom (infraclavicular) areas of the collar bones.

Each month I get swollen lymph nodes on both sides of my neck, that last four a week or so Had it for over 2 years but getting more frequent?

Go see an ENT doctor

Enlarged_lymph_nodes
It could be just repeated Viral infections(colds) but you need to be sure that you do not have Strept throat. A visit to your ENT doctor can help. if you want to try controlling it on your own, I wiould sugges that you try taking Vitamin C, 500mg daily and give it a 6 month trial(it is pretty cheap vitamin). This may help, in which case you should continue taking it on a regular basis.

Does swollen lymph nodes on the sides of the neck mean necesarely an infection?

Lymph nodes

Call_physician
Lymph nodes act as a filtering system for your body. While viral and bacterial infections are the two most common causes of swollen and tender lymph nodes in your neck, there are many other causes as well. It always best to have these checked out by your physician and dentist.

There are 3 swollen lymph nodes on the left side of my neck and the doctor can't find a cause. What could it be?

Pursue it

Head
Inflammatory response is a common response of LN with enlargement. A recent viral infection, skin eruption of head and neck area may be the cause. There are malignancies that may present with enlarged LN. Treatment may vary from watchful waiting, antibiotics, to needle biopsy of LN. Point is to have it followed by your doctor until it is resolved.

Dr. Michael Miller answered:

I think there are swollen lymph nodes on each side of my neck for over 2 weeks..what could cause it?

Monitoring Centers

Artery
Lymphatic system absorbs/carries things too big to go into the arteries/veins like bacteria eaten by white cells and digested food. Lymph Nodes "taste" the lymph for anything bad like bacteria/viruses/cancers, etc. When it detects a problem, it alerts the immune system and your body reacts. They enlarge in response to the inflammation they create when they react. They shrink when all is well

For the past couple of months I’ve had a few swollen lymph nodes on the right side of my neck very close to the hallow above the clavicle.

Concerned.

Lymphadenopathy that persists is not normal and needs to be evaluated with biopsy and other tests. Please consult your family physician for proper evaluation and management. Several etiologies, some of them not benign..

I have swollen lymph nodes on the side of my neck and behind ear. some of them hurt. i have had them for a month. Is this serious?

Likely benign, but

Open-uri20130106-11895-10inmds
The neck is a very common place for mild lymph node enlargements. We do about 5-6 Lymph node biopsies a day-from the neck-and most of them are benign. However if rapid growth is noted, or if bigger than 3cm, or if other symptoms develop you need to have it checked. The most common cause of enlarged lymph nodes in the neck are a viral illness, a dental infection, skin infection and "other".
