I tore ligaments in my ankle years ago. Within the last few months, ankle is swollen and painful. No new injury. Why re-occurrence after so long?

No: If you had a grade 3 sprain of your ankle ( severe) then you shouldn't expect much improvement @ 4 days.Swelling, discoloration are the norm. @ 2 wks you should be better but it may take 4-6 wks.
