Throat hurts to swallow but not sick, no temp, and no swollen glands. What could this be?

Sore throat: Two things come to my mind when patients complain of a sore throat without other symptoms, post nasal drip and early viral infections. Either way if this does not work in the next few days, try some Motrin for the pain and gargle with salt water. See my other answers on st. ...Read more

I have a sore throat, swollen glands, my ears hurt when I swallow and i am bringing up red/brown phlegm. What could it be?

Pneumonia?: This sounds like a standard respiratory viral infection that might have progressed to bronchitis or pneumonia. "Red/brown" suggest your sputum (phlegm from the bronchi or lungs) contains blood. See a doctor to be checked for bronchitis or pneumonia and possible need for an antibiotic prescription. Do it immediately if you have fever, chest pain of shortness of breath, or cough up obvious blood. ...Read more

However, it is imperative that a viral infection like infectious mononucleosis is considered and tested for as well, consult with your md. ...Read more

Something infectious: Mono is from the EBV virus, and can cause swollen glands (lymph nodes) and big tonsils. Strep throat can do the same thing, but Strep throat needs antibiotics. Some other infections can cause big lymph nodes. More rarely, blood disorders and blood cancers cause swollen lymph nodes and fatigue (person often gets anemic). This all means that a trip to the doctor would be wise. ...Read more
