Difficulty swallowing is complex. One could have decreased saliva which will make the food thick and viscous and harder to swallow. Food or liquids may be difficult to swallow and feel like they are getting "stuck" in the throat. One may also "choke" on liquids or foods during the swallow, before, or after the swallow depending on the problem ...Read more

It hurts to swallow, have cold sores in mouth, swollen glands in neck, and somewhat achy all over; what would cause all these symptoms?
Sore throat: Two things come to my mind when patients complain of a sore throat without other symptoms, post nasal drip and early viral infections. Either way, you can try an allergy pill or the new nasal steroid over the counter: nasal cort. I prefer the nasal steroid. Either way if this does not work in the next few days, try some Motrin for the pain and gargle with salt water. See my other answers on st. ...Read more

How does it feel when you have swollen glands in your throat? Does it feel like you can't really swallow and almost like you have a sore throat?
Just flew back from cancun Sat and I have the worst sore throat I have ever had, ever. Super swollen glands both sides and incredibly sore to swallow.
Something infectious: Mono is from the EBV virus, and can cause swollen glands (lymph nodes) and big tonsils. Strep throat can do the same thing, but Strep throat needs antibiotics. Some other infections can cause big lymph nodes. More rarely, blood disorders and blood cancers cause swollen lymph nodes and fatigue (person often gets anemic). This all means that a trip to the doctor would be wise. ...Read more

Dr. Can check throat: New throat pain can be from a strep throat infection (antibiotics are needed), a cold or influenza (antibiotics usually not used), or from some other cause such as allergies or irritants.
