A few days: Hello. It sounds like your son is receiving treatment for a throat Strep infection. The fever should either be much lower or resolved in 3 day. His throat pain should be improved by that time as well, although he may still have some mild discomfort. If the fever or pain persists longer than 5 days, he should be re-evaluated. ...Read more

Acute Pharyngitis: Your symptoms may be due to a bacterial or a viral infection. Bacterial infectinos of the tonsils or the throat lining are typically caused by streptococcal bacteria which respond well to Amoxicillin or Amoxicillin with clavulanic acid if there is no response. However, it is imperative that a viral infection like infectious mononucleosis is considered and tested for as well, consult with your md. ...Read more

Can I still take pill form amoxicillin and clavulanate that expired 9/15 for swollen lymph nodes?

Not such a good idea: Given that they expired over 1 1/2 years ago, I would not take them as they are partly organic molecules which can start disintegrating after their expiry date. ...Read more

Went to hospital, they said I had pharyngitis a, went back 4 weeks later amoxicillin didn't help. They sent me home. Swollen lymph nodes. Mono? I'm 16

Maybe: This could be mononucleosis, but in that disease swollen glands are usually an earlier symptom, and the patient feels tremendous fatigue. More importantly, if you've gone to ER for minor problem like this twice in month, it's time you had a doctor. An ER is far more expensive, and does not provide continuity of care. ...Read more

Hello I have recently had swollen lymph nodes in my neck. HIV test negative. Got some amoxicillin. Does that cure all std's or do I need more treatmen?

Hello I have recently had swollen lymph nodes in my neck. HIV test negative. Got some amoxicillin. Does that cure all std's or do I need more treatmen?

Whoa..: Apples and kumquats here, unless oral sex was involved. Cervical (neck) lymph node swelling is pretty common, and UNcommonly caused by very serious diseases. A swollen cervical node isn't seen often with STDs, unless oral sex is involved. Amoxicillin is a poor choice for STD treatment. See: www.cdc.gov/std/tg2015/pocket-guide.pdf for recommended STD treatment recommendations from the pros. Best! ...Read more

4 infected teeth pulled on tues. Today i still have very sore and swollen lymph nodes on the same side of my neck. On augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) still. Should i worry?

4 infected teeth pulled on tues. Today i still have very sore and swollen lymph nodes on the same side of my neck. On augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) still. Should i worry?

Probably not: Healing takes time. My first question is are you getting better each day or worse? By today the swelling should be starting to go down. Remember you had an infection of four teeth, then you had and injury - the extractions. Finally, antibiotics are not a miracle drug and, most of all, they take days to work. Drink lots of fluids, stay hydrated. ...Read more

My glands are swollen and I am in horrendous pain; no painkillers are working. I went to the dentist today and got amoxicillin. Could ER give me pain relief?

Depends: Sounds as if the dentist was trying to control infection prior to root canal or extraction treatment. Pain killers may cover over resolution of your infection problem. See an endodontist (root canal specialist) or an oral surgeon asap. Until you do, keep taking the antibiotic. ...Read more

Gland where tonsil would be is swollen. Can't go see dr because no money. Don't have tonsils. Should i take amoxicillin left from prior sinus infectio?

No: Would not take antibiotics without a very specific indication. The risks of complications far outweigh the potential benefits, if any. Hopefully you live close to a free clinic where somebody could take a look at this for you. If you have no other symptoms would just watch this. ...Read more

I have neck pain, fluid behind ear, swollen glands in neck and cold sore all on the right side. Dr. Put me on amoxil (amoxicillin) and steriods. Is this normal?

Is what normal?: The symptoms of neck pain, swollen glands, fluid behind the ear drum and cold sore all strongly suggest that you have a viral upper respiratory infection. The treatment with amoxacillin therefore might not be indicated. A general rule that most ENT physicians follow is this: if symptoms are getting worse after 5 days or not better after 10 days, we recommend empirically an antibiotic. ...Read more
