Muscle Mania: The mechanism of potential injury plays an important roll in the subsequent management. Without a better understanding of the nature of the injury it is impossible to recommend management other than to say ice is always a good starting point for acute swelling due to an injury. Protect the skin against frostbite and if persistent disability seek an examination. ...Read more

Muscle (Definition)

It is a body tissue that has the ability to contract. It shortens and generates force. It relaxes and returns to its original length. Muscles move joints, stabilize the body, move air and food through the organs, act as valves for bladder, bowel and other organs. They control movement of the eyes. R/O biceps: If u were lifting something rather heavy and felt pull or 'pop' and pain and bruising is felt in lower arm or front of elbow( antecubital fossa) then a biceps strain or rupture should be ruled out.@ age 54 this can happen and generally needs to be re-attached or u will lose elbow flexion strength and much supinating( palming up) power. See your ors.' other' strains rice...! ...Read more

Tendons/muscle on lateral side of forearm near the elbow spasm, swell, hurt and is tender. X-ray and ultrasound show nothing is wrong. What may it be?

Tendons/muscle on lateral side of forearm near the elbow spasm, swell, hurt and is tender. X-ray and ultrasound show nothing is wrong. What may it be?

Tennis elbow?: Might be inflammation at the origin site of the extensor tendons on the lateral epicondyle of the elbow. Ultrasound and xray would be normal; an MRI would likely show some edema/swelling there in the form of increased t2 signal, but this expensive test may not be necessary. You may just need some rest, ice, and possibly anti-inflammatory meds like ibuprofen. See doctor though if it continues. ...Read more

Tested neg. After 8 week exsposer to HIV. symptoms are muscle aches & swollen glands. Is it still possible for HIV? What else could it be? Plz help

Seroconversion: Seroconversion can take up to 6 months, so a negative test at 8 weeks post-exposure is no guarantee that you do not have HIV. I hope you were able to receive appropriate post-exposure chemoprophylaxis. Muscle aches and swollen glands are vague symptoms that could be caused by a number of different viral infections, or could be an early sign of acute HIV infection. Please see Dr. for more tests. ...Read more

Can an untreated swollen spinal cord cause same symptoms as multiple sclerosis and if so can the nerve damage and muscle weakness be made better?

Can an untreated swollen spinal cord cause same symptoms as multiple sclerosis and if so can the nerve damage and muscle weakness be made better?

Perhaps: Spinal cord swelling can be secondary to variety of causes, such as neuromyelitis optica, trauma, MS, tumors, and could cause localized symptoms indistinguishable from your MS. (Have you had an anti-aquaporin 4 test?) Typically might treat with steroids, but this would make your diabetes temporarily worse. Acthar might create a lesser complication. Check for NMO prior to starting MS med. ...Read more

Visited a sick friend, now have same symptoms: very sore swollen red throat, a lot of pain swallowing, coughing, muscle pain, congestion. Strep? Cold?

Yes! Probably cold: Both can be the cause; however the presence of a cough makes strep much less likely. This is an unusual time for flu. These sound like viral symptoms, so managing them symptomatically makes sense. Fluids, tylenol (acetaminophen) or Ibuprofen if desired as long as no contraindications, and rest. If your symptoms change or worsen, may need to be seen. ...Read more
