The top of my foot still swollen 2 weeks after ankle sprain. Shooting needle pain when guetting up after elevating it. What could this be?

Enough time.: It sounds as though something else may be involved in addition to an ankle sprain. Two weeks is long enough to wait, especially if there is pain and swelling. You would be best served with a directed evaluation and possibly imaging studies. ...Read more

I had a moderate ankle sprain that healed I use ankle brace daily & at the end of the day my ankle & foot are swollen & painful what is wrong with it?

Too much strain from: The sprain causing swelling in the brace used. Need to elevate leg at the end of the day to drain the extra lymphatic fluid so it goes back to your heart. And remain off your sprained foot as much as you can with it elevated throughout most of the day until it heels. ...Read more

I had a grade 2 or 3 ankle sprain 4 weeks ago, played on it 8 days later and now it is still swollen and painful. Should I go to a doctor?

Sliding Scale: After 4 weeks or is it 3 weeks, it depends on the initial trauma date or the secondary trauma date, and it is still swollen and painful. Go figure. The swelling in your ankle is telling you this needs to be immobilized and right soon. Crutches would be nice until you can see an expert and have him (her) offer up a considered opinion and treatment plan. ...Read more

I have a everted class 3 ankle sprain but the outside of myankle is swollen. When I jump my edl muscle hurts and I fall down. When can I jump again?

I had a high ankle sprain from basketball in september and its still swollen in january...Why?

Ortho evaluation now: If you have not already been evaluated by a sports medicine or fort and ankle orthopaedic specialist, you need to seek such an evaluation now. Most high ankle sprains, though slow to heal, should be resolved by 4 months. Stress x-rays and MRI may be indicated. You could have a concomitant injury to the cartilage within your ankle joint (mri best), and/or residual instability (stress x-rays). ...Read more

Would a plaster cast be needed for my ankle sprain? It's been 6 weeks it's swollen in pain but my initial X-ray show no breaks

Would a plaster cast be needed for my ankle sprain? It's been 6 weeks it's swollen in pain but my initial X-ray show no breaks

Unlikely: A plaster or fiberglass cast is commonly used for broken ankles. Although you may not have a broken ankle, you may have tearing of the ligaments or tendons in your ankle. If you are still having pain and and an unstable feeling in the ankle 6 weeks after your injury, you should be evaluated by a physician. It is possible you would benefit from exercise therapy or visiting a physical therapist. ...Read more

Had a very severe ankle sprain 6 wks ago with massive swelling. Still very swollen, have start up pain, and crepitus when moving it. What is this?

Had a very severe ankle sprain 6 wks ago with massive swelling. Still very swollen, have start up pain, and crepitus when moving it. What is this?

Expected swelling: It is common to have residual ankle swelling after a severe sprain. Ligament injury can take many weeks to fully heal and may result in residual ankle instability. Formal physical therapy, supportive shoe wear, compression hose and elevation of the ankle at the end of the day are helpful. Rarely ligament reconstruction is necessary if persistent sprains occur and nonoperative measures fail. ...Read more

I got high ankle sprain, 4 weeks ago. Booted. My heel looks crooked big bump, swollen and brusing on opposite of ankle. More painfull. Stepping hurts.

More than a sprain: Who diagnosed the high ankle sprain? A bump on the heel not usually associated with high ankle sprain. Pain and deformity in the back of the ankle suggests an achilles injury or even heel bone fracture. A true high ankle sprain should always be evaluated by an orthopedic surgeon because sometimes they need surgery if the ligaments between the tibia and fibula are completely torn. ...Read more

Ankle sprain for 6 weeks now and it's still swollen and I'm still in pain. And when I sprained it I heard a crack got a X-ray no break there any sugg?

See your doctor: Hi Peter, Sorry your ankle is hurting. The one thing I'd like to share is that an initial xray is not foolproof. You can have a break that isn't visible at first. Ongoing pain could be that your ankle needs more rest, but most physicians would recommend repeat imaging to be on the safe side. It may be a tendon rather than a bone that is injured. Good luck, hope it's better soon. ...Read more

Should my ankle sprain swelling have gone by day 5? Was only mild sprain could walk afterward, its just still really swollen and a little sore now.

Time, time, time: Ankle sprain swelling can take as long as a year to resolve. Almost never is it resolved by 5 days. The worst of the swelling typically resolves over 6 weeks. Do not let the presence of swelling cause you to restrict your activities. Instead, let pain be your guide. ...Read more

Will it hurt to wait on consult for severe ankle sprain? Can walk on it. Just swollen with burning pain at rest around ankle band & w lateral movement

I wouldn't wait BUT: Perhaps, one advantage to waiting on an ankle sprain to see anybody (such as X-ray) would be to give swelling a chance to be under control. So you could be doing typical R.I.C.E. maneuvers of ice, elevate, & compress ankle & this is therapeutic. You should NOT be walking on it....even if you "can" until seen by a doctor....unless living in the bush and even then, I'd get the tribal doc to clear. ...Read more

Severe ankle sprain 3 wks ago. Orthopedic put in cam walker. Looked like a balloon when first injured it and still pretty swollen. Is this normal?

Not unusual.: Ankle sprains are categorized by amount and degree of injury. Your sprain was "severe" which means multiple soft tissue structures were injured and ankle stability compromised--thus the cam walker. Very common for this type of injury to swell and stay swollen for extended periods. Some patients have residual swelling long term after severe sprains. Physical therapy can be very beneficial. ...Read more

Unlikely: Your malformation is not deep to cause it, compartment syndrome, is a acute emergency need immediate attention to prevent muscle and nerve damage, seen after vascular and joint replacement etc, result of obst to venous return due to muscle swelling, builds pressure inside, cause severe pain, swelling, loss of function if the compartment is not released, immediately. ...Read more

Just means fluid is collecting in the tissues. When only 1 foot is swollen, it usually means the cause is local (something going on with in the foot), but if both feet are swollen, it usually means your body is retaining fluid, and the only reason it's showing up in the feet is that gravity thing. If you stood on your head all day, ...Read more
