Paronychia is the: term for an infection that develops along the edge of the fingernail or toenail. Try warm soaks for 15 minutes in a 50% solution of antibacterial soap in water. Do this three or four times a day. Paronychia is usually caused by common skin bacteria entering the skin around the nail that has been damaged by dishwashing, other irritants, or finger sucking. If infection deep enough & soaking plus topical antibiotic not reaching or working well enough, then best change approach and may need systemic antibiotics to get to infection from inside out, not just outside in.
