What would cause a swollen lymph node on the back of the head in the center of the neck? Is that possible? And what causes it's been there a while.
My daughter came home from her dads with a fever and red swollen cheeks. What might this be caused by and how do I treat it? He gave her two different medicines within a very short time.
We have a cool towel on her head now.
Fever and red cheeks make me immediately think of fifths disease — also known as "slapped cheeks disease". It is caused by a virus called parvovirus b19 and is a very common childhood illness. It is usually harmless and does not require treatment unless the child also has a chronic disease that can predispose them to anemia such as sickle cell anemia. It can also be a concern if a pregnant woman has been exposed to someone with fifths disease. Below I've linked to website with more in-depth information on fifths disease.
In the meantime, it's important to keep your child comfortable and watch for signs of a more serious infection. "Red flags" that we look for with fever to indicate something more serious is going on are: -fevers that last 5 days or more -fevers persistently above 104f orally -a child that acts very sick — very irritable or difficult to wake -difficulty breathing -vomiting, diarrhea, refusal to drink, or dehydration -a purple rash, esp on the legs (a red lacy rash on the body is common with fifths disease) -stiff neck -any complaints of pain such as the ear, throat, stomach or a joint As always, use your judgement. If you think that your child is ill, err on the side of caution and call your child's doctor. ...Read more

Swollen Turbinates: Hello. Yes, swollen turbinates can cause head pressure and tightness. The link would be nasal and thus sinus function. When the nasal passages are blocked by swollen turbinates, the ability for the nose to warm, clean and humidify the air we breathe reduces and we then have a higher risk for infection. A sinus infection commonly has symptoms of head pressure and tightness. Consider afrin x 5 days ...Read more
Sinus congestion?: The swelling undoubtedly involves all the linings of the nasal cavity, including sinuses, not only the turbinates. It's just that the turbinates are easy for the doctor to observe. What is the cause of a swollen lymph node under my chin? It is not painful, however, sometimes it gets aggravated by swallowing. Is this worrisome?
Probably not: Lymph nodes enlarge in response to inflammation since they are designed to help fight this. The oral cavity is a major source of minor inflammation/infection and a swollen lymph node is not surprising. If it remains small, is soft and non-tender, and you have no other symptoms it should resolve. If not, have it seen by your family doctor or an ent. ...Read more
Not cause, but: They could be related in some way. The virus that expresses itself as a fever blister can prompt your lymph node to work hard to attack the intrusion (usually an infection) and the effort can cause the node to harden and/or enlarge a bit. Also, it can be two separate problems. In any case, an exam may be wise to treat either or both. Feel better soon! ...Read more
