Switching From Zyprexa To Abilify
Will Abilify (aripiprazole) cause insomnia if I take it? I thinking of making the switch over from zyprexa because of weight gain. Does it also cause akathisia?
Possibly: Although zyprexa is more notorious for causing weight gain than abilify, (aripiprazole) the switch might not provide much relief from this adverse effect. Abilify (aripiprazole) can cause increased appetite and weight gain, too. Abilify (aripiprazole) is as likely to cause sedation and drowsiness as it is to cause insomnia. I cannot predict the predominant effect which may prevail if you take it. Akathisia may result from Abilify (aripiprazole) as well. ...Read more
I was taking zyprexa for 1 year.6 months after I stopped it had a 2nd maniac episode. Now I am taking Abilify (aripiprazole) for a year. Can I cut it without a 3rd ep.?
Please don't: These meds are very critical never to stop as it will bring manic episodes if u understand how they work they help your brain to regulate the sda all three neuro transmitters to help u regulate your brain function so stopping the meds suddenly will collapse the system if u want to stop or change the meds talk to your doctor I do it all the time for my pts I know taking meds is hard but please dont. ...Read more
Is it not a good idea to take zyprexa and Abilify (aripiprazole) together? Trying to decide if Abilify (aripiprazole) is better for me. Took it in the afternoon, zyprexa last night
2 Antipsychotics: Why are you taking 2 antipsychotics at the same time? This sounds like unusual prescribing -- and I suggest consulting with a psychiatrist for diagnosis and also appropriate treatment. If this is your psychiatrist prescribing 2 antipsychotics, please make sure s/he is not cross-tapering off of one with the intent of changing to the other. Taking both would be for a very brief time only. ...Read more
Would Abilify (aripiprazole) cause more akathisia than zyprexa? I heard Abilify (aripiprazole) makes people wake up early. I need to wake up early for class. Zyprexa sleeps toomuch
Akathesia is a: Fairly common side effect from abilify (aripiprazole). Luckily it can be treated with medications like Cogentin or benadryl. No promises of waking up early on either medication but most of my patients sleep well on Abilify (aripiprazole) and are not groggy in the morning. ...Read more
Pdoc said Abilify (aripiprazole) is more "activating" than Zyprexa. At 30mg I am tired all the time. Is this due to Abilify (aripiprazole) or perhaps just stress from end of term?
Will Abilify (aripiprazole) or zyprexa cause more akathisia? Inner restlessness? I feel both but think it is mainly abilify (aripiprazole).
I am diabetic refuse to use seroquil or zyprexa abilify. Dr started mr on 20 latuda (lurasidone). is this a good choice or basically the same old same old?
Could be: Latuda (lurasidone) is a relatively new medication that is often used in treating bipolar disorder or in augmenting the effects of other antidepressants. As with all medications, how it, works for you may be different than how it works for others. One benefit is that it is weight neutral. With your diabetes, zyprexa is not an option. It is also not sedating like seroquil. Give it a try. ...Read more
Is it possible to be only on antipsychotics for some time and then discontinue? Will schizophrenia be healed? All gone with zyprexa and then Abilify (aripiprazole)
We wish so, but no: Unfortunately, current treatment of schizophrenia is able to manage symptoms only -- and not cure the condition. Medications can keep symptoms at bay, and working closely with your psychiatrist will allow you to have the healthiest life you can overall. If you stop your antipsychotic medications, chances are very good that symptoms of schizophrenia will return. ...Read more
Does Abilify or geodon (ziprasidone) or zyprexa have less side effects? Which one has less prolactin elevation
Is abilify associated with as much weight gain as zyprexa and Seroquel. And if so is it dose related?
Each of these atypical antipsychotics are associated with cholesterol problems and weight gain. According to studies of populations of individuals, Zyprexa is associated with the most weight gain of the three, Seroquel is in the middle and Abilify is the least. Each person is different.
I've certainly seen significant (20 lbs+) weight gain from each of these agents. ...Read more
Out of zyprexa and Abilify (aripiprazole) which one would lead to a greater increase in lipids? How about insulin resistance?
Lipids and insulin: Zyprexa might lead to more change in lipids and Insulin resistance than abilify, (aripiprazole) because Abilify (aripiprazole) is supposedly more weight neutral. However, Abilify (aripiprazole) can still create these effects, and increase likelihood of metabolic syndrome. ...Read more

I take 30-40mg of Abilify (aripiprazole) for Bipolar I. I'm having moderate to severe mania. Could I add 1.25 to 2.5mg of zyprexa short-term to stop the mania?
Moderate to Severe mania is not something you should be trying to medicate yourself. Please see your prescribing MD as soon as you can for further guidance. It appears you are on some medications that should be evaluated given your symptoms.
You can also seek emergency help if you so feel necessary based on severity of your symptoms. ...Read more
Dr added zyprexa to my antidepressants many months back. Still depressed. Would replaceing zyprexa w Abilify (aripiprazole) b better, and how are they different?
Different: They are fairly different. abilify (aripiprazole) is indicated for augmenting antidepressants; its less sedation; has less weight gain; and less impact on lipids & sugar. abilify (aripiprazole) modulates receptor activity instead of completely blocking it - therefore it tends to have fewer side effects. That said, zyprexa can be extremely helpful despite its side effect burden. ...Read more

38y f schizophernic, ptsd, severe anxiety, I tried zyprexa, abilify, (aripiprazole) latuda&always gain massive weight@#392. Other meds=bad side effects too. Suggestions?
Multiple approaches: At the weight your describe you might need to approach the weight from multiple approaches - diet, exercise and discussing with you regular doctor whether you are a candidate for gastric bypass surgery, and if not, how you can become a suitable candidate for same. Your psychiatrist will need to be part of this discussion with you your doctor as he/she will need to help you avoid certain meds. ...Read more
Do any of these drug combinations work? Prozac abilify, (aripiprazole) Prozac zyprexa, wellbutrin zyprexa, for schizophrenia.
Friend takes 2000 depakote/20 zyprexa/4 mg klonopin/15 abilify (aripiprazole). For bipolar schitzophrena. Does this seem like a heavy regime. Always craves chocolates?
Zyprexa, Abilify (aripiprazole): And Depakote and all cause stimulation. It's difficult to say what is overkill when it comes to a polypharmacy situation with someone with bipolar schizoaffective disorder. The use of two antipsychotics is indeed sometimes necessary. However, great attention should also be paid to the weight issues. If the weight gain is on going then perhaps a different medication will need to be tried, but all of that will need to be left up to of the prescribing psychiatrist. Best wishes and I hope that you are not freezing as badly in madison as we are here in racine. ...Read more
Does abilify, (aripiprazole) zyprexa, or trazodone cause red eyes? I've had red eyes for months and only taking trazodone now. Discontinued others and many others
Psych meds & eyes: In theory, Bc all if the meds you've listed are anticholinergic to some degree, they could contribute to dry eyes, which could lead to rubbing, irritation, & red eyes. However, you describe the problem has been ongoing for months now! Have this checked by your doc &/or an ophthalmologist, who can assess for other medical causes and treat if necessary. Be good to your eyes -- they're quite useful! ...Read more

Stay adequately: Hydrated and make sure your prescriber is aware. Please get tested for sjögren's syndrome which can cause chronic dry mouth. Dry mouth should not continue after the meds are stopped. Yes but: They are two meds of the same class but can feel very different. Abilify (aripiprazole) tends to cause insomnia while Olanzapine is very sedating. Raising the dose of Abilify (aripiprazole) may cause sedation at or above 20mg, reducing the need for olanzapine. Olanzapine has a lot of wt gain and problems with blood sugars and is usually reserved for patients who haven't responded to other agents. ...Read more
