Hello.: Hello. I can't diagnose your symptoms. However, if you have been exercising and develop chest tightness and wheezing, you could have some exercise induced reactive airway disease. If you have a little cold or virus, this could also be the cause. It sounds like a one time occurence. However, if this continues, you should see your doctor to ensure that you don't have asthma. Now if you are an older person and you have chest heaviness and difficulty breathing, than you could be having a cardiac event. Your wheezing suggest lung issues but I also included some heart attack info. (chest pain, tightness, squeezing or fullness is the most common presentation. However the pain can also present in the upper back, the upper middle abdomen, jaw, head, teeth or in the arms (left more than right). One could have nausea, vomiting or it could feel like indigestion or heartburn. Feeling short of breath, sweating and just feeling out of sorts can also occur. About a fourth of people have no significant symptoms during a heart attack.) take care.

My asthma is exercise induced, I do take my puffer 10 minutes before exercising, but I still am short of breath when exercising, what to do? Thanks

Spirometry /EKG: I think your pediatrician should determine that your shortness of breath is caused only by your asthma. Other problems such as cardiac disease may cause shortness of breath. Repeating the albuterol when you are short of breath but not exceeding the maximal dose, and a spacer device is useful for delivery.

Can exercise cause pleurisy or just shortness of breath?

Can exercise cause pleurisy or just shortness of breath?

SOB: Exercise can't cause pleurisy which is due to rubbing of the inflamed (usually infected) outer lining surfaces of the lungs. But vigorous exercise can make intercostal muscles (muscles between your ribs) and costochondral joints (where ribs attach to your sternum (breastbone)) sore which mimics pleurisy as it may hurt to take a deep breath or cough.

Is it necessarily a bad sign if I have shortness of breath during exercise?

Not a bad sign: No shortness of breath in an otherwise healthy individual would be related to level of fitness as you get into better condition you will likely be able to exercise longer and at a higher intensity than before without getting short of breath.

Hi doctors, was just wondering what is a good exercise to help shortness of breath?

Hi doctors, was just wondering what is a good exercise to help shortness of breath?

Any exercise: Any exercise will help - it's best to do something you enjoy and avoid anything you have to force yourself to do. I find walking with my mp3 player is very relaxing and enjoyable. Start with an easy distance and work up to a minimum of 30 minutes 5 days a week or more.

If shortness of breath is due to anxiety will it effect exercise like jogging etc?

No.: Think about this. If shortness of breath is due to exercise, and exercise is a great anxiolytic, your shortness of breath in general might be improved with exercise. Go for it!!

Shortness of breath: Follow up with doc/ urgent care, you need PFTs (pulmonary function testing to asses if you have asthma or at least peak flow and EKG to assess if heart issues, if EKG is abnormal you will need an echocardiogram. Every time I sprint, run up the stairs or exercise I get shortness of breath. Why?

Exercise: Burst exercise causes rapid heart rate increase shortened diastolic period, increased residual pulmonary vascular resistance and mechanical resistance yielding shortness of breath.

Why do I get shortness of breath everytime I sprint, exercise or run up the stairs?

Oxygen consumption: The higher the demand the higher the need. More effort needs more oxygen & energy then there is a need for air & shortness of breath sensation. The more you do and endurance (resistance) increases less effort & less sensation.

Bronchoconstriction: Your symptoms are consistent exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (aka exercise-induced asthma). This does not mean you necessarily have asthma. A major goal is to ensure that exercise is not avoided. As your cardiovascular condition improves this may resolve. It it persists or worsens you should see physician for possible medications/inhalers to use and determine need for further testing.

See your doctor: I agree with dr rand that seeing a pulmonologist would be helpful, but as a family doctor I recommend starting with your family doctor. Your problem is likely to be handled just fine by them, for less cost. It is important to have a primary care physician who knows all about your health in order to put the pieces together and provide you with the best all around care.
