Is it common for a tympanoplasty to not work?

Is it common for a tympanoplasty to not work?

Depends: Success rate for tympanoplasty depends on size of perforation (ear drum hole), age at repair (for children), type of procedure used, and type of graft used. What are the differences between a myringoplasty and a tympanoplasty?

Ear surgery: The difference is limited. A myringoplasty involves a surgery to just the tympanic membrane or ear drum. A tympanoplasty involves examining and inspecting the middle ear bones and fixing the hole in the ear drum. Surgically, a tympanoplasty is technically more difficult because you have to raise up the ear drum from its natural position. With a myringoplasty, you just fix the hole in the drum. ...Read more

Does tympanoplasty leave scars?

Does tympanoplasty leave scars?

Hidden scars: Depending on the size and location of the ear perforation, the procedure may be performed through the ear canal or with a post-auricular incision. If done through the canal, no one except a doctor will be able to see any incisions (looking at the ear drum). The post auricular incision is hidden in the crease behind the ear, so it is all but invisible. Don't worry about scars from tympanoplasty. ...Read more

Child had a tympanoplasty 16 months ago and the patch feel off Should tympanoplasty be repeated or is there a more effective surgery?

Defined by doc: This is something best answered by those with the advantage of knowing all the history & doing an exam. Can you advise me on going for an ear operation called tympanoplasty.?

Ear: Not much info. If you have a hole in your eardrum that has been checked out by an ENT, then you have the option of repairing it in surgery. The pro of fixing it is that you won't have to keep it dry and can swim. It may help your hearing as well. The con of course is surgery but in the hands of a good otolgic surgeon there is a good chance of success ...Read more

Get it checked: It is possible that the pe tube (pressure equalisation) has become dislodged or clogged. If you can 'pop' your ears (forcing the eustachian tube open) it suggests that the pe tube may not be working correctly right now. ...Read more
