Is swim-ear alright to use on a child with ear tubes?

Is swim-ear alright to use on a child with ear tubes?

No: There have been a couple of studies where parents applied a prescription (quinolone category) drop at bedtime in children with ear tubes who swam earlier in the day. The alcohol in otc swimmer's ear preparations will cause pain and potentially cause hearing loss. As an ent, i only require plugs for swimming in lakes or oceans, not pools or bath time. ...Read more

Fluid, ear drum two days ago. Used "swim-ear" over-the-counter and it burned 2nd time used, woke up clogged with hearing loss. Home remedy? Fly wed!

Need ear checked: Swim ear is an alcohol-based ear drop, hence the reason it burned. If your ear is clogged, it is difficult to determine the exact cause without looking at the ear. It could be the that you had wax in your ear that liquified and is now coating your ear drum or if you somehow developed fluid in the middle ear. Best to get it checked before you fly. ...Read more

How can I fix my swim ear pain?

External otitis: If you mean swimmer's ear, then that is an inflammation or infection of the ear canal skin. Most ear doctors will threat that with appropriate ear drops and give you adequate pain medication. Swimmer's ear, however, is really external otitis and may be caused by q-tip usage or other instrumentation of the ear canal or more rarely fungal infection. ...Read more

I put swim ear drops in my toddlers ear with tubes. No one told me not to do this! Can this damage her ear?

I put swim ear drops in my toddlers ear with tubes. No one told me not to do this! Can this damage her ear?

Not if you stop: The middle ear space is usually protected from outside agents by an intact drum. The only thing we want to put in a tubed ear is the occasional antibiotic drop that might be needed. Your swim ear drops likely contain irritating chemicals that could sting or push canal germs into the middle ear. The body is usually tolerant of a little, but stop & consult with your doc before using anything else. ...Read more

You : You have a form of chemical conjunctivitis. Some drops for swimmer's ear have alcohol in them in addition to antibiotics - this helps dry out the ear canal. I would use artificial tears (for the eye) 4 times daily. You should lay low today. If you do not detect serious improvment by the morning, i would arrange for evaluation by your local eye doctor. However, i expect no serious longterm problems. In general, most eye doctors do not like use of visine. ...Read more

External otitis: Make sure to keep the drops at the proper temperature. Swirl them gently before applying . If the canal is too full of thick debris for the drops to go in, an ear nose and throat doctor (ENT) can suction out the pus and even place a cotton wick into the ear canal. Usually this is not necessary, but can provide relief for severe infections. ...Read more
