Pain & swelling left rib cage?

Pain & swelling left rib cage?

Rib pain: The rib cage does not often become painful and swollen, unless there was some direct injury to the area (rib fracture/contusion) or some indirect sprain/strain to the muscle/ligament structures (costochondritis...). There can be soft tissue masses (and rarely bony) that can present with such symptoms, so please get evaluated. Read more

Trauma? Shingles: Dear YKarim, have you hit the area? If not, when reading this, I got concerned about Shingles (Herpes zoster) in which case, early antivirals will help. Monitor if you develop redness or bumps in the skin. Costochondritis is another though. A virtual or personal consult might help to clarify the reason. Good luck. Read more

My daughter is having pain and slight swelling in her upper left quadrant. It is below rib cage. What could that be?

Spleen or ribs: It can be hard to tell the cause of pain in this region of the body. Teenagers with mono can get an enlarged spleen and have pain from that. Another possibility is pain from the cartilage connected to the ribs ie costochondritis. The lowest ribs have more cartilage than the others that can really get inflamed. (i've had it) the best treatment is motrin. To be sure I would get checked soon. Read more

I have slight swelling right below my left rib cage don't know what it is being treated for mild diverticulitis right now could it be that?

Unlikely: If it feels like dough, it could be a lipoma (a benign fatty tumor underneath the skin). These are usually not tender when you press on them. It is unlikely that you would have any cutaneous (skin) manifestations of diverticulitis, especially mild. Read more

Pain on left side of rib cage (no physical injury, but swelling), even on deep breathing. Localized on touching. Had a bike accident 2 days back.

Pain on left side of rib cage (no physical injury, but swelling), even on deep breathing. Localized on touching. Had a bike accident 2 days back.

Possible fracture.: It is possible to fracture a rib or just bruise it up pretty well. Sometimes the pain can be severe. As long as you are not having any shortness of breath (excluding that due to sharp pain with inspiration) you will heal. There is no real benefit to having rib xrays as the treatment will be the same -avoid injuring it while it heals. Read more
