Surely: An x-ray would be needed to tell. Or you may have a contusion. You also want to make sure you do not get an infection from the nail ripping off and that the nail bed itself is not lacerated. What is moderate pain and swelling in the joint of my big toe where it joins my foot. I'm 43 and very physically active.?
Overuse...: First thing that comes to mind when you say big toe joint and pain is gout. However, usually the pain is pretty severe, and it's red/inflamed. Very active people can have minor sprains and strains in the great toe that causes inflammation and pain, especially if there is some underlying arthritis that gets flares up. I would start with ibuprofen/rest and if not better in few days see doc. ...Read more

Boyfriend has a very large blister on big toe and it popped on it's own. The fluid that came out was brown. The swelling in his foot has gone down. And he can move his toes. I drained it and clean around with an alcohol swab then antibacterial soap.
So far, So Good.: It sounds like you've done all the right things. The brown could be the residue of old blood. You need to check for the signs of increasing cellulitis and infection. Things like swelling, redness, heat and pain. If the wound does not improve with your treatment than a trip to your doctor may be in order. If the sight clears, the congratulations are in order, I think. ...Read more

Stubbed toe, (beside big toe) few days ago, bruising, min. Swelling but hurts when I move it, esp. Right on top of foot, could I have fractured it?
Maybe: Only way to tell is with an X-ray. If the toe is still straight, the only thing that is usually done is a splint to the adjacent toe. If the symptoms are bad enough, and/or the toe is deformed, best to have an X-ray. See an orthopedist next week to get this done. Otherwise, need to go to an ER. Hope this helps! ...Read more

Gout vs heart issues: The swelling you're describing could be gout; the onset of which can occur at any age and is often the consequence of an extremely rich diet with pork, wine, salt, etc. If that's not the case then the issue is backflow from your heart (i.e. congestive failure). see your pcp; you need either a consult with rheumatology or cardiology per your PCP. ...Read more
I stubbed my big toe on a door. I have rings of dark bruising around the joints, light bruising across the top of my foot, and mild swelling. Broken?
Hard to tell: It is difficult to tell if a bone is broken without an xray. It can swell and feel quite painful just from a bad bruise. If it is very swollen and bruised and if it is painful to touch over any part of the bone then you may want to get an xray. If you do not get one right away and it is getting better then it is probably not broken. If the pain gets worse or is not going away, then xray is needed. ...Read more
