If you are talking of within the spine, there are number of things, from infection to injury, things like transverse myelitis, etc. If it is in the meninges, infections like spinal meningitis can occur which causes swelling. Hard to say: It is hard to say, there are many potential causes. It is unusual to have a spine related complaint in and of itself, so it is a little more likely it is something in the area.
