I punched a wall out of frustration, and aside from the pain, the ulnar side of my hand is numb to touch. Is that just caused by swelling?

Maybe: Yes, could be due to pressure on the nerves due to swelling. The bigger issue at the moment is that you have swelling which is likely from a fracture. So, if not done so already, you need to get an x-ray and probably have an orthopedic doctor check it out. Most orthopedic offices have an acute care clinic for problems like yours. ...Read more

Punched a wall. Pinky seems a lil crooked, and slight swelling in the back of hand area below ring and pinky fingers. Fist can be clenched. Fracture?

Boxers Fracture: You have likely fractured the head of your 5th metacarpal neck with possible displacement and angulation. Do not use your hand, protect it and visit an Orthopaedic Surgeon in clinic. You need x-rays and splinting until an ortho has a chance to schedule you for a closed reduction of the fracture (putting it back in place) and then percutaneous pinning, casting, or in some cases operative fixation. ...Read more

Self control: Hi. I'm glad it was a wall and not a person, but still losing control of yourself and behaving irrationally can hurt someone, including you. Please consider your ability to control yourself, and seek counseling if indicated. As for the hand, an X-ray to make sure there's no fracture would not be a bad idea. Peace and good luck. ...Read more

My daughter punched a wall and the knuckle is depressed and she has lots of pain! There is swelling and bruising. This is in the pinky finger.

Finger pain: And swelling & bruising. Your daughter needs to get her finger x-rayed to make sure nothing is broken. If it is and it heals out of alignment she can have trouble w/it for life. I punched a rug & now my pinky area feels sore, no bruise or swelling? Any idea?

Pain 5th finger: I'm not sure when this happened; but persistent pain beyond 3-4 days or any abnormal position of the finger should be checked with an X-RAY. The mechanism also suggests a fracture, which may be tiny. It also may be suggestive of a Boxer's fracture. All the best. ...Read more

Be seen: I would recommend being seen and having an X-ray. There is something called a "boxers fracture" that can be caused by striking something with a closed fist. The "bump" you are describing could be a displaced fracture which might require reduction for a good result. ...Read more

Okay, so I punched a hole in my wall 6 days ago. It was 2 1/5 to 3 inches of sheetrock. It started swelling words each day. Could it be broken?

Yes: You could absolutely have a fracture, though the swelling can definitely occur without fracture as well. The only way to find out is to have x-rays of your hand. If you are having any difficulty moving your hand, wrist or fingers, or if you have any numbness/tingling etc., you should get an x-ray done.
And, stop punching walls. You lose that fight every time. ...Read more
