There are three different types of ear infections that affect different areas of the ear. Outer ear infection (Otitis externa) affects the ear canal and the outside part of the ear. Middle ear infection (Otitis media) affects the middle ear and leads to fluid accumulation behind the ear drum. Inner ear infection (Otitis interna) is a less common inflammation of the inner ear that causes vertigo, ...Read more
A coworker swears by warm olive oil for ear infections. Is it safe to pour anything in your ear like that?
It depends: There are times when it could be dangerous, like a perforated ear drum for instance. But for a suspected middle ear infection, this form of treatment has been practiced for centuries and provides relief while the body's mechanisms for dealing with the infection take over. After years of prescribing antibiotics for these, we now know that the majority will heal on their own without drug risks. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
Coconut oil safe to use in ear daily for ear pressure? Pain/water behind eardrum currently on antibiotics but ear pressure remains.
Yes, safe but...: Yes, coconut oil is safe to use but unlikely to help this much. It does have some antimicrobial properties but ear pressure is most likely related to allergies & inflammation around the eustachian tube. Antibiotics may not help much either. Avoiding dairy & wheat may help as well as treating allergies. Consider homeopathy & seeing a cranial osteopath. ...Read more
No: It has no value for that issue. ...Read more
What kind?: Ear oil is unlikely to prevent otitis media (middle ear infections) since the ear canal doesn't communicate with the middle ear. But, it may help with pain from a middle ear infection. For otitis externa (swimmers ear), there is no evidence to support using wally ear oil as prevention but i can't think of a reason why a drop in each ear once a week during swimming season would be harmful. ...Read more
ER visit diagnosed outer and middle ear infection in left ear. Prescribed drops and amox, can't afford drops. Is amox enough? Also using onion juice.
No: amoxicilin isn't enough for outer ear infection, as the bugs are different, you can try this homemade remedy: 50% rubbing alcohol +25 % vinegar + 25% distilled water, 4-5 drops in your ear three times a day, can be used also for preventing future fungal ear infection, if that doesn't work, please see your doctor again and ask for less expensive ear drops as acetic acid otic drops, good luck ...Read more
What is the best home remedy for swimmers ear? I'm traveling- olive oil? Half white vinegar half rubbing alcohol? Other?
Alcohol and vinegar: Alcohol and vinegar in equal parts is the classic recipe from lakeside summer camps. The alcohol disinfects the ear, displaces the water, and evaporates quickly at body temperature. The vinegar restores the normal acidic pH of the skin and prevent fungal growth. Do not use any over the counter drops if you may have a perforated eardrum or a tube in the ear. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Is it safe to use coconut oil to cure my yeast infection? I'm 11 weeks pregnant! And can a yeast infection harm my baby?
Over the counter: Vaginal yeast medications are readily available at any pharmacy. This is the treatment. Coconut oil is not known to be a cure for vaginal yeast. Yeast infections do not have a baby but they are quite uncomfortable for the mother. Since medication is easily available there is no reason to suffer ...Read more
Hearing loss. Irrigation, olive oil & ear drops all failed. Any ideas doc? It's reoccurring, found out the other day I suffered /w bad ears as a baby.
See ENT: You most likely have a cerumen impaction (earwax build-up). Even though you tried some outpatient therapies for ear wax build-up it is still most likely. I would see ENT though so they can assess the cause of the hearing loss. If you don't have a cerumen impaction then there can be a more significant cause of your hearing loss. Not sure what "suffered with bad ears as a baby" means. ...Read more
