If: If your wife had surgery with general anaesthesia, and the findings you describe were noted after the surgery, most likely there was some minor trauma incurred during the intubation while placing the breathing tube. WhatRhymesWithUvula?: Sometimes the uvula swells up due to infection, inflammation, sensitivity or allergy. It's quite a soft floppy little thing so it can sell-up pretty large. Sounds like it's now large enough that it's toughing the back of your tongue and giving you a gagging feeling. If chewing ice chips doesn't help, best to then have it seen by a doctor before it gets worse. There are ways to decrease that swelling ...Read more

Hello.: Hello. I don't know how severe your swelling is. If you have progressive worsening of your sore throat and the pain and swelling is worse on one side than the other, there may be concern for a peritonsilar abcess on one side. In that situation there would be deviation of your uvula to the opposite (contralateral) side as well as swelling in the area. The tonsil is likely to be enlarged & beefy red with white purulent drainage. It sounds like you also have swollen lymph nodes. The problem with a peritonsillar abcess is that the infection can become deep and sometimes your airway can occlude. A peritonsilar abcess is a true emergency. If any of this sounds like you, I would recommend that you be evaluated at an er right away. You should not drive yourself. ...Read more
