How long does it take to get hydrated once you drink enough water? And how much water should one drink if dehydrated?
A few minutes: Water alone is not the best way to hydrate when dehydrated. A sports drink is actually better as the sugar and electrolytes in it promote hydration at the cellular level. If one is participating in sports such as running or cycling, its best to consume a high quality sport drink such can be found at hammer nutrition, but gatorade works fine. In terms of how much to drink, your body can usually regulate water intake very well. A general guideline is to consume about 500ml of a sports drink for 1 hour of cycling for example. ...Read more

Varies very widely: Reality: varies widely. If people are very healthy & in comfortable environment, can survive indefinitely on as little as 0.5 liter a day yet tolerate as much as 25 liters/day, a 50 fold range. With heart weakness, liver failure and/or kidney failure the range narrows markedly, both ends. Too much in, especially too fast, & we drown/die. This can happen to even to the seemingly young & healthy. ...Read more

If I want to hydrate myself, will drinking 1 cup of black tea help or hurt my goal, on balance? What about coffee?

Not really: Diet sodas do not help with weight loss, and usually have a heavy load of phosphoric acid. The artificial sweeteners paradoxically increase the need for sweets elsewhere in the diet. You can have 1 or 2 12oz servings without much downside. More than that is excessive. The best hydrating agent is simply water. It is less expensive, healthier, and has no side effects. My dr. Says the 8 glasses rule is a myth and I should just drink when thirsty. True? How do I know I'm well hydrated, esp. In dry winter months?
Somewhat: If you had no other source of fluid intake this would be a reasonable goal. However, people consume fluid bearing foods every day. Some, like applesauce or pears are 95% water. Vegatables run about 60%. When you take in fluid value in your regular diet, adding 8 glasses/d is just going to make you pee more. It is not needed for most. Humans who follow their well-designed thirst mechanism will be fine ...Read more
