Patients feel they are "constipated" when passing hard or small volume stool, or they feel full & bloated. Had an x-ray to show you're not blocked? We don't know if your gut is sluggish or your rectum works correctly, or if there is something extrinsic to the gut causing problems. Time to call your doctor for help. ...Read more

Enema: You don't say how long it has been since your last bowel movement. But if 2 suppositories (were they laxative or glycerin) and a bottle of citrate of magnesium hasn't stimulated a bowel movement than an enema may be the next step. Disposable fleet enema (sodium bisphosphate) is easy to use and affordable. ...Read more

What?: Why did you take a medication not knowing what it does/is for? Magcitrate treats constipation. It usually is "effective" within 6 hrs, if going to see results. Can cause gassy/abdominal cramps and pain while it tries to make things move. Citric acid is in all citrus fruits, among many other things for flavoring and preservation. ...Read more

I've been taking 600mg of magnesium citrate everyday for the last month. What side effects should I be aware of?

Mg citrate: If using it as a laxative - you may be creating a situation where your body becomes dependent on it to have a BM. Otherwise - i might be concerned about the amount of magnesium your body is absorbing. I would talk to your doctor about this - rarely should constipation last this long. Also a serum magnesium level might be appropriate Good luck ...Read more

How much magnesium citrate is safe to take? Is 400 mg to high? I take it to help with anxiety. I keep reading conflicting information on dosage.

Titrate: There are individual differences in magnesium absorption, so there is no standard dose. Basically, "titrate to bowel tolerance". Which means take as much as you can handle without giving yourself diarrhea. For anxiety, magnesium glycinate may be slightly better.
