Supposed to take antibiotics 3 times per day... Every? Hours is that?

8 hours?: Generally most antibiotics are taken one hour before food or two hours after food; some are taken with food. You do not need to get up in the middle of the night to take the antibiotic; morning, afternoon and before bed is fine. Please check with your md to be sure which foods to avoid or if yours should be taken with food. ...Read more

Is it safe to take antibiotics every day for 3 months to treat recurrent uti's?

Usually yes: Although there are potential side effects from doing this you have to weigh it against having the recurrent infections and taking frequent shorter courses of antibiotic. Persistent allergic cough since 10 days. Yellowish phlegm at times. Am taking cetrizine/expecorant. Should I take antibiotics as there is no relief?

Probably not...: If your cough is due to allergies, you may have some bronchospasm which is best treated with a bronchodilator inhaler and possibly a steroid inhaler. You need to see your doctor for evaluation. You may even need pulmonary function testing to see if the cough is due to bronchospasm. Antibiotics would only be indicated if there was a clear bacterial etiology which you do not describe. ...Read more

Take a test: It's possible that you may be pregnant. Some antibiotics can decrease the effectivemess of birth control pills. Plus, birth control while very effective is never 100%. Check a home pregnancy test to confirm. Home pregnancy tests are very accurate and easy to perform. If you don't have access to one, see your doctor and get it done in the office. ...Read more

I keep getting recurrent bouts of glan dular fever, every 3 weeks or so, have to take antibiotics to clear chest. I am fairly healthy normaly, keep workn?

Rest and listen: Glandular fever is a viral infection, not necessary to take recurrent antibiotics. If having recurrent symptoms a body is screaming that it's not getting what it needs. Is it true we need to take antibiotics for three days before our teeth being removed for tooth abscesses?

Is it true we need to take antibiotics for three days before our teeth being removed for tooth abscesses?

No such rule: There is no such rule regarding this postponement in treatment. In my opinion, and I fully understand other dentists may disagree with me, in almost all cases, especially with otherwise healthy individuals, the sooner the cause of the infection is addressed the better. There are some exceptions to this policy. Rarely, if ever, had a problem doing it this way in 40 years. It's a prof judgment call. ...Read more

If I have chronic bronchitis, should I take antibiotics every time it flares up?

No: Many times bronchitis has a viral etiology. In fact in the first 5-7 days of illness you are much more likely to have a viral infection than a bacterial infection. I encourage my patients to try and wait for a week before starting antibiotics. However, you still may need medications to control symptoms such as nasal drainage and cough. ...Read more

Diarrhea: Diarrhea can be from foods, medications, infections (bacteria, parasites, viruses), functional disorders to name a few etiologies. My friend had erisipela and had to take antibiotics. The day I visited her, she finished her antibiotic pills. Could I get infected by her if touched?

Strep infection: It's very unlikely that you would 'catch' the same germ that your friend had, which by the way is 'Strep' - the same germ that causes Strep throat. Especially true if your friend JUST FINISHED antibiotics for that -it should have killed anything there. My question is, did you have contact BEFOREHAND that might have resulted in you 'carrying' the Strep. If you're feeling fine, I wouldn't worry. ...Read more

You need to be under the care of a good ENT who can do a more comprehensive approach with nasal endoscopy, cultures of your sinuses with culture directed antibiotics, imaging and possibly surgery. It doesn't seem appropriate to have you making the decision when to take antibiotics and you should not be on antibiotics all the time. ...Read more

Can I take antibiotics once a day instead of twice? I'm suppose to be taking 500 mg of amoxicillin twice a day, once in the morning and once at night. Can I just take 1000 mg once a day or would that be too much?

You: You can, but you shouldn't! Amoxicillin is cleared quickly in the kidneys, so it won't really harm you to take twice the amount at once. But you won't have constant blood levels in order to fight infection. You really need to take it twice a day. ...Read more
