I wanted to find out why my epiglottis is suddenly visible. Should it be a cause for concern? I am an adult.

Peek A Boo!!: Yes, as long as it's in the back of his throat and not hanging from his ear. A small percentage of people have an epiglottis that peeks up from the back of the tongue. That's OK as long as it's not causing any disturbing symptoms, like a foreign body sensation or chronic inflammation and pain. ...Read more

See an ENT: The epiglottis is positioned deep and usually not easy to view. If what you see is in fact epiglottis, and since it is painful, it is likely that your epiglottis is swollen. If so, what caused it? While swelling may be from bacterial infection, this may be related to more systemic condition such as immune system dysfunction. If you do not have symptoms, do not worry about the epiglottis being visible.

Dysphagia: You have dysphagia at a minimum and would need to see your health care provider about the possibility of actinic cheilitis which is a lip problem. I think you are looking at the Uvula which probably was not very clear with the big tonsils that were removed
You can not see the Epiglottis usually when looking at it through the throat

Sore throat: This may be a form of infection, possibly viral. What you are seeing is probably your "uvula" which hangs down in back of you throat. You would not see the epiglottis which is further down the throat. Have your PCP take a look at it. ...Read more

Sore throat: I'm not sure how they saw your epiglottis in the ER, but if they think you have epiglottitis, you should have been hospitalized. Do you have fever? you are likely dehydrating which may cause the fast pulse. Strep is only one test. Were you tested for infectious mono? if there is suspicion of epiglottitis (low prob given no dyspnea or dysphagia) I would suggest coverage for HIB. See your PCP. ...Read more
See below: It is a small piece of tissue just behind the base of the tongue in the throat. It's basically a lid with a hinge. Its purpose is to covert the top of the trachea (windpipe) when you swallow so that the contents in your mouth go down your esophagus and not the trachea into your lungs. Not epiglottis: You may have white areas in the back of your throat but it highly unlikely they are on the epiglottis. Do you have pain, swollen glands, elevated temperature? No: It stays there forever. She was born with it. The epiglottis covers the trachea (covers the hole leading to the lungs) so that she doesn't choke when swallowing. In kids, it is easier to see. Consider another cau: Highly unusual to sense epiglottis unless acutely inflamed or swollen which would also be painful. Sounds like globus, a foreign body sensation. Can be from acid reflux, post nasal drainage, large palatine or lingual tonsils, tightness of the upper esophageal sphincter, or functional.
