My epiglottis is visible and painful near the base of my tongue. I feel a constant pressure like something s stuck even after 2 hours of drinking h2o?

See an ENT: The epiglottis is positioned deep and usually not easy to view. If what you see is in fact epiglottis, and since it is painful, it is likely that your epiglottis is swollen. If so, what caused it? While swelling may be from bacterial infection, this may be related to more systemic condition such as immune system dysfunction. Ent doctors are well trained to evaluate, diagnose, and treat this area. ...Read more

Sore throat, lethargy, x3 days. Ok to breathe/swallow, neg strep & xray, fast pulse. ER gave steroids & motrin for visible epiglottis. Should I worry?

Sore throat: I'm not sure how they saw your epiglottis in the ER, but if they think you have epiglottitis, you should have been hospitalized. Do you have fever? you are likely dehydrating which may cause the fast pulse. Strep is only one test. Were you tested for infectious mono? if there is suspicion of epiglottitis (low prob given no dyspnea or dysphagia) I would suggest coverage for HIB. See your PCP. ...Read more

What is the epiglottis?

What is the epiglottis?

See below: It is a small piece of tissue just behind the base of the tongue in the throat. It's basically a lid with a hinge. Its purpose is to covert the top of the trachea (windpipe) when you swallow so that the contents in your mouth go down your esophagus and not the trachea into your lungs. That would cause choking and risk infection like pneumonia or other damage to the lungs. ...Read more

My sister is 19. She saw 2 days ago a small tongue, looks like epiglottis on back of her tongue. Not bothering, no pain. Will it go itself?

No: It stays there forever. She was born with it. The epiglottis covers the trachea (covers the hole leading to the lungs) so that she doesn't choke when swallowing. In kids, it is easier to see. It is a bit harder to see in adults, but if she is 19 years old and her epiglottis is easily seen, she'll likely be that way forever. ...Read more
