Injury?: Did you bump it? Very common to get soreness in this area from even a minor trauma as there isn't much padding here. Shin pain: Several things come to mind: shin splints, muscle pain in the foreleg (often the soleus or tibialis posterior muscle), posterior tibial tendinitis, pes anserine bursitis, varicose veins, poor circulation ("claudication"), swelling/edema, tibial stress fracture, and pinched nerve in the back (l4 or L5 radiculopathy or 'sciatica').
