Sudden Sharp Pain Behind Ear
Sharp pain in bone behind ear that radiates down my jaw and in my neck was at the doctor the other day he said my ears look fine. What could this be?
Sinus, eust. Tube: Ear pain does not have to come from the ear. A sinus infection could produce pus that runs across your eustachian tube and cause pain. The eustachian tube can be irritated or slightly swollen and feel full, causing what we call eustachian tube dysfunction. Throat problems can sometimes cause ear pain. Pain the the temporomandibular joint, when you chew, can cause ear pain. See an ent. Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Several options: If the sharp pain is triggered by touching or wind blowing on the area it might be a neuralgia of the occipital or upper cervical nerves. If it just happens without an inciting event and is very brief then it may be difficult to elucidate a cause. Sometimes it can be from muscle spasms in the area. If the pain becomes more constant or ear symptoms develop then see ent. Read more

Right behind my right ear right on the bone has been tender. When I press in the area, a sharp pain shoots up my head. What could it be?
Occipital mastoid: bone tenderness may indicate outer ear or occipital lymph nodes involvement if there's also mild swelling. If no swelling then it could be a normal finding, as long as there's no inflammation present locally around the area. Pain is important to discuss with your doctor. If mild tenderness only, watch that area, and call your doctor. If it doesn't improve, call your Doctor for further examination. Read more

If it does not control your pain well, then you may take a Motrin but not for more than once or twice as it can cause ulcers in your stomach. So you will be best served by having a primary care doctor whom you can go and see. Read more
