Sudden Choking Feeling
I sometimes wake up because of choking feeling and I cough to return to normal. What is the cause of this?
Possible reflux: During running and other physical activities, our GI tract slows down to shunt blood to our working muscles. When this happens, digestion slows way down. This increases the likelihood of having reflux and you'll get a sour taste in the back of the throat. "choking" when runs: Do you feel short of breath or wheeze when you run? Do the symptoms occur with any kind of vigorous exercise? Do they occur more frequently in cooler times of the year? Any history of asthma? May have exercise-/cold- induced asthma: airways tighten up & breathing is more difficult; may wheeze. See fp for pulmonary function testing & exam. Reflux: Gastric reflux can result in the sensation of choking or shortness of breath or the sensation of "heart burn" if it is continuous it may be more severe. Life style changes like stopping smoking, stopping alcohol, stopping caffeine may help. I have been having a choking feeling when I go to eat dinner. I basically prevents me from swallowing with out forcing myself to do so? What can be?
Dysphagia. See MD: Dysphagia: (difficulty swallowing) can be due to incoordination, as well as possible blockage. It matters if it is for solids and/or for liquids. No: Oral thrush is a yeast infection of the mouth. Sometimes it is accompanied by thrush in the esophagus, which causes trouble swallowing.
