Sty Under Upper Eyelid Treatment
Warm compress: A sty is a moderately inflamed "sweat duct" in the eyelid. The ducts get blocked. I tell my patients to get a damp wash cloth and pop it in the microwave for 30 seconds. Test it on your wrist to make sure it's not too hot. Place warm compress the closed eyelid for about5-10 minutes and re-heating as necessary. If it does not get better in a week or gets worse go to your eye doctor. ...Read more
Warm compresses: A stye is also known as an external hordeolum, which is an acute purulent inflammation of the eyelid margin. Both internal and external hordeola can be managed with warm compresses, placed off and on for about 15 minutes at a time about 4 times a day. If it doesn't resolve in 1-2 wks and hardens, ophthalmology referral for incision and curettage is appropriate. ...Read more
Infected sty under upper eyelid in l eye x 3 wks, now a sty in r eye. Both eye drainage/crusty. Iv abx done, oral steroid done. Oral abx done.?
Stye treatment: If you have styes on both upper lids, then you likely have have underlying blepharitis (lid inflammation) which is causing your meibomian glands to become occluded and infected (like a pimple). Treatment is usually warm compresses for at least 12 minutes followed by lid massages with possible antibiotic/steroid combination eyedrop. I would see an eye care provider to make sure that's what it is. ...Read more
Chalazion: A chalazion is a small bump in the eyelid caused by a blockage of the inner eyelid oil gland. It is caused by a blocked duct in one of the meibomian glands. These glands are located in the eyelid (oil gland) directly behind the eyelashes that produce a thin, oily fluid that lubricates the eye. If it bothers you, and ophthalmologist can remove it with surgery. ...Read more

A small white pimple like bump appeared in the corner of my inner upper eyelid. It is tender to the touch and irritating my eye. Is it likely a sty?
25 year old lady with upper eyelid bump and eye irritation. It is quite likely a sty or chalazion. You can use a warm compress applied to eye for a few minutes and then wash your eyelid/eyelash area with some baby shampoo. If the problem gets worse, see your physician for an exam because antibiotic ointment can be used. Try over the counter artificial tears for the eye dryness.

Probably a cyst: If the eyelid is not inflammed, not red, and not hurting, then you probably have discovered a chalazion, which is a cyst formed by the eye to seal off and prevent the spread of a stye. I had a stye on my upper eyelid, the swelling went away but now it's just red, can It swell up again?
I have had a stye in my upper eyelid for 10 days. It appears more swollen than originally, it is rounder, lower on lid and looks puss filled. Normal?
No it is not normal. It would probably be best to call your doctor. With that in mind I would not be surprised if you were referred to an eye doctor.
Sounds crazy but at age 6 I broke 5 pair of glasses - Dad was not happy! Since then I can't live without spectacles.
Hope all goes well for you. ...Read more
I have a bump on my upper eyelid. I was told it was a stye. Doing compresses and prescribed drops. It's starting to dry out. Do I still do compresses?
Yes: I recommend doing the warm compresses till the redness, swelling & soreness completely resolves. Remember to only use the eye medication for the prescribed amount of time. It's also a good idea to continue performing lid hygiene on a routine basis, especially if you're predisposed to styes. Good luck. ...Read more

I have an internal stye inside my upper eyelid. I've had it for 4 days and it still hurts. Is it okay to wear makeup?
Avoid if possible: The style is a clogged eyelid gland and wearing make up can potentially make it worse. Try some warm compresses for 10-15 minutes a couple of times a day followed by eyelid massage to try and open up the glands. If the entire eyelid becomes tender, red, and swollen, see your doctor...it could be cellulitis. Take care. ...Read more
My daughter has a large stye on her upper eyelid and it's been there for nearly 2weeks. What does it mean when a stye turns black?
Breakthrough: A stye is a pus filled gland of the lid. If untreated, it will enlarge and eventually breaks through to the surface. If the area is not cleaned - and they are commonly tender at this stage - the material passing through to the outside can oxidize and turn dark to black. This should be cleaned with warm soaks and this may help clear it up. Otherwise see your ophthalmologist. ...Read more
I have a stye on my upper eyelid it just came up this morning it is not as swollen as it was this morning is it ok to wear make up right now?
Upper eyelid got swollen. When I lifted up the eyelid below the eyelid there is a pop. It is not a stye and don't know what it is. Little pain is there?
Go to eye doc: Without seeing it, there is no way to know, but swollen eyelid and pain is not a good combination. See an ophthalmologist right away. Good luck and feel better. ...Read more
My upper eyelid has been swollen for five days now. I think its a stye but I can't see a small pimple or anything. I've cleaned it, but its still here?
Possible concern: Eye lid swelling can come from coming into contact with something that is an irritant or from a stye as you suggested but it can be more concerning than this. I would have expected that after five days something "more" would be present and more obvious - like a discoloration, etc. I would actually have your medical provider evaluate it. You could attempt to apply some cold compresses until seen. ...Read more
I have what I believe to be a stye on my upper eyelid. I first noticed it last night around 9:00. It's a little red and swollen, but I cannot see a pi?
Heat treatment: Use a warm wet washcloth held under the very hot but not scalding tap in your kitchen. Put it over the lid on the affected side (really both lids as yours eyes should be shut) and do this about 5 times per day and 5 minutes each time. This almost always will eliminate a stye. Antibiotics and things at drug stores like "Stye ointment" will have no effect. ...Read more
I have an internal stye in my upper eyelid does it hurt when it pops and how will I know if it has popped? It's the second day I've had it
After using compress on upper eyelid stye some blood came out. Is this normal? I started antibiotic ointment yesterday. How should I proceed?
Possible: As long as your sty is resolving and the pain lessening, I would continue the hot compresses & lid massages. Sometimes a little bleeding can result if the sty has broken through the gland into the adjacent capillaries (like a pimple). But, if no umprovement with your treatment or if worsening, have it checked out by an ophthalmologist. Good luck. ...Read more
I have a stye on my upper eyelid. It ruptured 3 days ago. The eyelid swelling is gone, but the stye itself is still quite big. What should I do?
Stye: The use of a warm compress or washcloth to the affected area for 10-15 minutes, four to six times a day, can be an effective and allow rupture and resolution of the stye, and will aid in relief of symptoms. You should not press or squeeze this to promote drainage. This can spread or worsen the infection. If the stye persists despite this see an ophthalmologist and they can lance this. ...Read more
I have had a stye on my left upper eyelid for7+months now it hasn't gone away. It doesn't affect my vision or anything but it is a red bump without head?
Eyelid cyst: Looks like you had stye to start with. It has healed as far as the infection is concerned. But the swelling has now converted to a cyst that usually is painless. You can leave it alone and over a period of time it should shrink away. However you can have it removed surgically for cosmetic reasons. Please check with your insurance, if you have one, as they often will not cover a cosmetic surgery. ...Read more
Pimple on inside of left upper eyelid (feels bruised when touching and blinking) ; stye? Woke up with it ; how long will it take to go away? Thanks!
A few days: It sounds as if you have a sty on the inside of the eyelid. Try heat to the eyelid (a small baking potato heated in the microwave and wrapped in a cloth and the applied for about 10 minutes every 4-6 hours should help). This will help it to mature and open--probably 1-3 days. You should see your MD to confirm and prescribe an antibiotic once it opens and drains ...Read more
Painful stye, r upper eyelid that began yesterday. Today, I have some swelling down the r side of my face (no redness, no fever). Is this normal?
I have a white spot on the inside of my upper eyelid. Its not a stye. Looks like the stringy discharge that collects at corner of the eye in morning.
Hordeolum: Does seem likely. You can safely wash your eyelids every night and morning with 1/4 strength baby shampoo and apply warm compresses to try to get it to settle down. (You could sleep with a warmed eye mask on, the type with gel that you get at a drug or discount store). Wash your lashes well with Q tip. See a doc if it doesn't go away soon. Good luck! ...Read more
How long does a stye on your upper eyelid take to be removed if you go to the doctors? Does the doctor have to sleep your eye when they drain it?
Stye treatment: If you have tried warm compresses and massage to the eyelid for a period of 3-4 days and there is no change in the size of the stye, seeing the eye doctor to have this opened and drained is the best option. It is a rather quick procedure in most cases. The doctor will numb your eyelid and then use tiny instruments to open the area of the stye and remove the stye. ...Read more

Styes / Chalazion: Styes are from blocked or infected oil glands that open at the edges of the eyelids. Using warm compresses to the eyelids 5-10 minutes once or twice a day followed by cleaning of the lids can help styes to resolve. Using an ophthalmic antibiotic / anti-inflammatory ointment can also help. In some cases the doctor has to drain the sty under local anesthetic, but most resolve using heat. ...Read more

I: I do not know your age, whether you have had any other eye problems, have dry eye, or if you wear contact lenses. A picture is often worth a 1000 words, but I will assume that the initial diagnosis is correct. Usually, a stye, if caught and treated early, will respond to warm (very warm, or as hot as tolerated) applied directly to the affected area for at least 15-20 minutes 3-4 times a day. Antibiotics are often given as an umbrella--to cover for and decrease the bacterial count--and treat any lid problems (such as blepharitis, or dandruf of the eyelids) that may be contributing to the problem. In most cases, the stye will come to a "point" and drain a little pus-like material in a few days. That is when it is most important to take an antibiotic topical drop to decrease the bacteria that are released. However, steroid drops must be taken with great care, and monitored by an eye specialist closely because they can give a "false sense of improvement" and possibly allow a virus to activate in the cornea causing inflammation of the clear part of your (i.e. "viral keratitis") that can result in a permanent scar--or even perforation and severe infection of the inside of the eyeball itself! A stye is usually not active at 10 days! So there may be something else going on! Crusting should be gone by now unless you have an associated lid disease, or other problem (for example, dry eye), and I would try to get it checked out and stop using the steroid eye drops unless another eye doctor that has examined you personally has said it was ok. I hope this helps. Good luck! ...Read more
