Sturge Weber Syndrome (Overview)

Sturge-weber syndrome is a rare disorder that is present at birth. A child with this condition will have a port-wine stain birthmark (usually on the face) and nervous system problems. The cause of sturge-weber is unknown.

Genetic cause is : Usually sporadic, possibly due to mosaicism-some, but not all cells have gene abnormalities. Eeg's to look for seizures (~ 70%). Neuromaging to monitor growth of hemangiomas, blood vessel abnormalities of brain & brain coverings. Vision exams for glaucoma (30-48%) & hemianopia (decreased vision in one eye).
