Several functions: Strontium actually replaces calcium within the lattice work of the bone and in part, it's increased "weight" relative to calcium contributes to some part of increased bone density. But strontium also stimulates the bone building cells(osteoblasts) to build up bone and inhibits bone resorbing cells(osteoclasts) which also improves bone density. ...Read more

Unknown comparison: Raloxifene is a medication that has effects similar to estrogen on the bone. Strontium ranelate is an organic form of the element strontium. It has effects on bone that are different than raloxifene. It is not approved for use in the us but is available in europe. There are no comparative studies between the two drugs.
