How do I explain to my 6 yr old neice what autism is?

Simple is best: Sometimes the simplest answer is the best, particularly when dealing with the curious or worried. Letting her know that some kids don't understand things as easily & act different is better than a full discussion. When she is 8-10 a bit more can be understood & by the teen years, a full adult like explanation is in order. The discussion must not exceed a kids ability to understand the issue. ...Read more

Im a 21 year old male . What exactly is high functioning autism? Apparently I am disgnosed with it. :( is that a bad thing?

Forget the label: If you are functioning well, then i would simply forget the label. If you heading into difficulties you should seek out psychotherapy or psychiatric treatment just as anyone else would. The label at this point could only be helpful in terms of entitlements, but it sounds like you will not be needing them provided you are able to live independently. It is possible that the label no longer applies. ...Read more
