Stress (Definition)

Stress affects most people in some way. Acute (sudden, short-term) stress leads to rapid changes throughout the body. Almost all body systems (the heart and blood vessels, immune system, lungs, digestive system, sensory organs, and brain) gear up to meet perceived danger. These stress responses could prove beneficial in a critical, life-or-death situation. Over time, however, repeated stressful situations put a strain on the body that may contribute to physical and psychological problems. Chronic (long-term) stress can have real health consequences and should be addressed like any other health concern. Fortunately, research is showing that lifestyle changes and stress-reduction techniques can help people learn ...Read more

Can stress make you feel extremely drained and tired? I am currently in counseling to work through other issues. I've been taken iron regularly too.

Can stress make you feel extremely drained and tired? I am currently in counseling to work through other issues. I've been taken iron regularly too.

Good & bad stress: If you're in an impossible life situation or had something with which you truly cannot cope, this is "bad stress" and it'll make you feel bad. Other stress is "good stress" because it pushes you to achieve, learn new skills, and put bad stuff behind you. If you're iron-deficient, you're going to feel tired and drained even before you become anemic. Best wishes. ...Read more

I have been using iron supplements, for the past 4 years, only recently, constipated and bloated, low due to childbirth, stress, not absorbing frm food?

My left eye is twitching like crazy, my hair is falling out, severe headaches, and my mouth tastes like iron. Any ideas? How can I lower my stress?

Stress? I don't know: That all those things could be due to stress is possible but far-fetched. Your symptoms are very suggestive of drug side effects, especially Depakote. If you are taking any major presciption drugs, start there. If you're not or stopping your meds doesn't eliminate the symptoms, you need to be worked up for metabolic, autoimmune or other conditions. DON'T stop any meds without supervision by an MD. ...Read more

Hair loss for 18 months in crown area, first due to stress, then perhaps due to very low TSH as a result of Thyroxine dose increase. Iron levels fine. Hair is now finer / softer and continues to shed - will my hair ever go back to how it was?

Hair loss for 18 months in crown area, first due to stress, then perhaps due to very low TSH as a result of Thyroxine dose increase. Iron levels fine. Hair is now finer / softer and continues to shed - will my hair ever go back to how it was?

Wrong assumptions: Iron level not relevant. "Stress" probably not a factor. Very low TSH because of overdosed thyroid probably not part of it. Thin hair on top is very common as women get older. Other meds? Birth control? Menstrual history? Pregnancies? Weight change? When you see a dermatologist be prepared to detail these items. You might be helped by spironolactone or dutasteride. ...Read more

Lighter periods x 2 mos, notice almost no cervical mucus either-been very stressed, I'm otherwise healthy with iron anemia. Worry? Preg neg

Unclear question: If you are anemic, take oral iron supplement with multivitamins. If you think you are pregnant, do a home pregnancy test, if you miss a period by 4-5 days. If the result is negative repeat the test 4-5 days later unless you get a period by then. Use first morning urine and follow the instructions for the test carefully. If you do not wish to be pregnant, use contraception all the time. You may consider implanted contraceptive or an IUD.

I would like to know what the high iron can do yo me though. It id not heridtary, I always had low iron before. I am not on any medications?

Recheck labs: It is very difficult for a person to have high iron if he does not take iron-containing supplements and doesn't have a hereditary or genetic disorder where his body holds onto iron inside the liver. People with that disorder get liver damage. One can recheck the tests, which is not just the iron level, but also ferritin, transferrin, and transferrin saturation. I am unable to deal with stress in my life and have tried a lot of different methods. I don't want to take medication. I am feeling hopeless.

Need therapy: You may benefit from working with a psychotherapist who can help you learn to deal with your stress. Psychotherapy can also help with depression & hopelessness -- but if you have a full-blown major depressive episode, medications may still be suggested. Levofloxacin: It is important to take oral levofloxacin at least 2 hours before or 2 hours after any antacid or mineral supplement containing iron, calcium, zinc, or magnesium since these bind levofloxacin and prevent its absorption into the body.
