Is streptococcus viridans found in throat harmful or beneficial?

Is streptococcus viridans found in throat harmful or beneficial?

Let me explain: The organisms are most abundant in the mouth, and one member of the group, s. Mutans, is the etiologic agent of dental caries in most cases and populations. Others may be involved in other mouth or gingival infections. If they are introduced into the bloodstream, they have the potential of causing endocarditis, particularly in individuals with damaged heart valves.

Streptococcus (Definition)

Is a group of bacteria that grown in long chains of cocci (round cells). They are classified in part by whether they hemolyze sheep red blood cells completely, partial or not at all. The beta (complete) hemolysis ones are further classified by their capsules and the prototype is group a streptococci, that cause strep throat and rheumatic fever. The Alpha (partial) ...Read more

My throat culture & sensitivity c/s report says "organism: moderate growth streptococcus viridans group" is this normal, I've white coating on tongue?

My throat culture & sensitivity c/s report says "organism: moderate growth streptococcus viridans group" is this normal, I've white coating on tongue?

Possible fungal...: Overgrowth. If you have cultures, you are probably already on an antibiotic for something. S. Viridens is a common oral bacteria that we all have on some level. Yours may be higher than normal but the white on your tongue could be candidiasis from a lack of "regular" bacteria that keep it down. Try 1/2 hydrogen peroxide/ 1/2 or mouthwash, brush your tongue, if no luck see a dr. May need nystatin.

What is a streptococcus viridans urinary tract infection?

What is a streptococcus viridans urinary tract infection?

UTI: This would be a very unusual cause of UTI and would question the diagnosis and the manner in which the urine culture was obtained. It can conceivably happen but would be quite uncommon.

Is streptococcus viridans a type of urinary tract infection?

Strep viridans: This is the name of a group of bacteria comprising different species of streptococci, some of which may produce uti, but this is not a very common cause of UTI and would question the validity of the diagnosis depending upon the manner in which the urine specimen for culture was obtained.

My boyfriend has streptococcus viridans in his urine. My doctor said it's not necessary to treat? Why not? Can this be harmful to him? And cause uti?

My boyfriend has streptococcus viridans in his urine. My doctor said it's not necessary to treat? Why not? Can this be harmful to him? And cause uti?

S. viridans: Is most likely from contamination of the urine specimen and not the cause of infection. That is why your doctor is not treating it.

I have streptococcus viridans in my mouth. I'm pregnant and due any day now. Can I kiss my baby when he's born with this bacteria in my mouth?

I have streptococcus viridans in my mouth. I'm pregnant and due any day now. Can I kiss my baby when he's born with this bacteria in my mouth?

No problem: Strep viridans is considered a "commensal organism" which means it is a normal colonizer in our mouths. It is not a pathogen in it's normal location, and it only becomes a problem when people who have heart valve problems have dental work. Kiss your baby to your heart's content! And congratulations :).

Very unlikely: Colonization of vaginal canal with streptococcus agalactiae aka group b strep has been well known to cause serious infection in newborns and young infants.

Do you treat a streptococcus carrier if there are no symptoms, only a positive rapid strep test? When do you treat?

Do you treat a streptococcus carrier if there are no symptoms, only a positive rapid strep test? When do you treat?

Need more info: Why was the test done, if there were no symptoms? Did you confirm the rapid strep with a culture? If there are no symptoms, there is no need to treat a test result that may not have been done properly. How long can a blood infection, such as streptococcus pneumoniae, be in your system until the symptoms become severe? Can it be months?

No: Generally, bacterial infections in the blood are serious fairly quickly - it would be unlikely to have a chronic bloodstream infection unless you have an abscess or source for continual infection and you would feel ill with fevers, chills, poor appetite, etc.

I was diagnosed infected by streptococcus mitis in semen. My semen now curdle due to my infection? Does this virus cause serious symptom?

I was diagnosed infected by streptococcus mitis in semen. My semen now curdle due to my infection? Does this virus cause serious symptom?

If untreated yes: This a bacterial infection. Appropriate antibiotic treatment recommended along with what is known as a test of cure culture after treatment completed to ensure infection gone. Can affect sperm motility if not properly treated which can lead to fertility problems in the future. Please be sure you see doctor, get appropriate antibiotic treatment. Hope this was helpful. Best of luck. Dr. R
