Hi it been a week I been diagnose with strep throat still haven't gone away even with antibiotic should I worry?

Sore throat: First, who examined? Did anyone evaluate for a peritonsillar abscess? And did they do a monospot? Many 'strep throats' are actually mono, which while strep bacteria may be present in a culture, the strep isn't the cause of symptoms. If it's mono, an ebv panel might help, but the treatment is rest and no Aspirin if it is. ...Read more

How to get rid of strep throat fast without an antibiotic?

You can't: If you have actually been diagnosed with strep throat (with a test....It can't be accurately diagnosed by looking at it), then it is really important to clear it up with an antibiotic. The bacteria that causes strep throat can cause other problems with your kidneys or heart, and no alternative medicine will prevent those problems from happening. ...Read more

What antibiotic works best if im allergic to pennicillan and have strep throat?

Keflex: First, be sure you are really (or still) allergic to penicillin. Second, make sure you really have strep throat (some people have strep in their throat all the time!). Then your doctor can choose from several different cephalosporins. The cheapest one is the generic form of keflex. Zithromax is a distant third choice because rarely the bacteria are resistant. ...Read more

Is it ok to have alcochol if I have chronic strep throat an not taking any antibiotic for the holidays?

Drinking: This is a very general response. First people should be a legal age to drink. If one had a chronic condition and was not symptomatic ; not having a fever, cough or active sore throat the occasional alcoholic beverage would not be of concern. But I emphasized the occasional drink. Of course you already know if I taking medication not a good idea. ...Read more

What's the best antibiotic for strep throat?

Penicillin still #1: Despite being the oldest antibiotic, it is still the medicine of choice for treating strep throat infection. It is not 100%, but still the "standard of care." it is sometime not used because of penicillin allergies or because of younger age (adolescent/teen-more difficult with schedule--school/sports etc) due to required frequency of use --4x/day for 10 days.
Good luck. ...Read more

Positive strep throat culture, is floxacin an antibiotic for this?

Not one I would use: This class of drugs have a broad range of effects against many types of germs but I find no listing for strep throat. It is not used in kids and rarely used in most simple infections. Since strep is universally sensitive to the penicillins, and other inexpensive medications, it is one I would never use for strep throat. ...Read more

Hi. Is it normal that the white spots in my throat becoming more even though I'm on antibiotic for 2 days from strep throat? Thank you

Can be: The white spots generally represent debris originating on or adhering to the tonsils during the illness. Since the illness reduces feeding activity, the mechanical stripping of these surfaces by swallowed food is diminished. You must also take the antibiotic for several days before it builds up in the tissue at levels needed to stop the germ. Be patient and finish your meds. ...Read more

I had strep throat completed 10 days of antibiotic about 4 days ago. Now I have a congested cough that has a very bad taste when I cough. Any suggesti?

Infection: It is possible that your lower respiratory tract has become infected with a different or similar, resistant bacteria which is causing bronchitis. You may need additional antibiotics with a medication that will better target this area. Guaifenesin, more liquids, & humidification may help. You should discuss this with your doctor or I am available, if you need further assistance. ...Read more

What is the recommended antibiotic for strep throat?

What is the recommended antibiotic for strep throat?

The very first one: Most medical guidelines recommend penicillin as the first line agent to treat strep throat. However, I feel that Amoxicillin (a derivative of penicillin) is more often prescribed simply because it is more tolerable/less side effects. This is debatable. It is important to treat strep pharyngitis as it can cause an array of medical problems down the line in the form of rhematic fever. ...Read more

Yes, it is.: It is possible, but not likely. Amoxicillin generally works well for strep. My son was diagnosed with group c strep throat. He is coughing now. Does he need an antibiotic?

Depends: Strep A is primarily treated with antibiotics to prevent a later transition that some have to Rheumatic fever. This condition can injure the heart, brain while some have kidney damage. Strep C does not have this potential and in many will produce a mild self healing process. If it were moderate or severe antibiotics might be indicated to aid the body in reducing/clearing the infection. ...Read more
